Fitting a 951 intercooler in 944 front end

I have heard this is possible with some hacking of the intercooler, but will it fit under the middle panel between the headlights and not interfere with the bumper or headlight controls. I was just told that it will not fit right at all. Please help

it should bolt right in just like on the 951. I think the holes are there and everything.

Its the same car only the 951 is on steroids

Thats exactly what i was thinking, but i was told since the front bumpers are different, there isnt enough room for the intercooler on the 944. I even looked in there and see the mounts for it. Hmmm. I'll just buy it and figure it out. Thanks

Early 944s are stamped differently, and a 951 intercooler will NOT fit. This is why you see some sources quoting as such. I'm not positive if a late model one has enough room for it, but ducting is going to be a problem as the bumper opennings will not line up. A ram air set up is used to force air through the intercooler on the factory turbos...

So you do not think that it will fit in a 86 n/a? when you say later years do you mean 87 and later since alot was different in that year? I was planning on cutting out the front nose panel like the ones they sell for 200 bucks which is ridiculous! Im not worried about if it will cool or not that much, i want it to fit! Thanks for the help!

I mean late 85 and up when I say "late". As far as I know the 8 valve normally aspirated 944 body/chasis did not have any structural changes from 85 1/2 through 89. I think that the intercooler itself may fit, you do have to channel air through it though, otherwise the intercooler efficiency will go down significantly (to the point of near no cooling of the intake charge, if no air is flowing through the core).

Side question, have you started this conversion yet? What has been done to the car so far if you've started? Are you going to a custom set up or duplicating the factory 944 turbo?

You know I don't think this is a very smart route but if you're going to do it, why not pick up another cheap intercooler and just stuff it infront of the radiator?

I havent actually started putting it together but i have the 5th injectors and a blowoff valve, all i need is the intercooler, MSD BTM and a supercharger, i am not going to turbo it, there is already one from the factory, thats pointless. Im also putting complete turbo suspension and brake system on there, rear valance, and some other turbo parts! I'll try to fit it, thanks
