speakers

hi all. just picked up a 86 951. it was missing the speakers. im looking for new speakers for the front and rear. what will fit? all the threads I found on here are older. and all the speakers people recommend are not available anymore. im not looking for the greatest sound. I want to use my original speaker covers in the doors too. any help would be greatly appreciated

The height of the center coax tweeter speaker may be too tall and prevents many of newer speakers from fitting with the original grills. However there are a few models out there that fit or can be modded to fit by removing a spacer under the coax tweeter.

Hello - take a look at the link below. Crutchfield has a great configurator where you plug in your make/model and the populated results are only those that will work with your specific model - really handy feature.

Here’s what I put in the fronts. Required some small mods however make the covers work.

Pioneer TS-4675R

Not in may car, or may grill covers may not be factory. What do factory grill covers look like?

I've attached a photo of the standard grill. When I torn down the factory setup I remember there were these small plastic spacer/bosses between the speaker and the grill. Having them in place added a little extra gap between the two components which might have helped fitting them. For reference is was a late 87 951.

Haven’t got to the rears yet, but was planning for the same speaker. Not really looking for great performance, just a little better than stock speakers.

I used Alpine SPS-410 Type S 4"2 way speakers in the rear. Seems fine to me. Good mid range punch from what was in there before.

Those look like my speaker covers. I need to make some spacers.

I would install these but I have no idea what they're called or where to find them...

You may be able to remove the plastic trim from the top of the center cone and not need a spacer. There is also a screw thru the center cone that can be removed and a spacer removed to lower the speaker profile so spacer's are not needed.

88+ cars (before 968) that do not have ten-speaker have a taller speaker grill.

The grille area is made of metal with a plastic surround. The frame acts as a spacer, making it possible to mount speakers as deep as about 2 inches. For example, an Audax VE4X6F0 mid/woofer, which is 52 mm deep, barely fits. It actually presses against the window track.

The parts list for the later grille assembly is:

* 944-555-149-00-01C Grille (2 needed)
* 944-555-159-00 Frame (2 needed)
* 477-035-375 Bushing (8 needed)
* 043-938-3 3.9x22 lens-head sheet metal screw (8 needed)
* 011-522-7 Washer (8 needed)

Note that the bushings are important to space the frame out far enough from the door panel to allow the grilles to snap on. Also note that the replacement speakers MUST be the European oval shape,- not rectangular. The replacement speakers must also have a thin steel mounting frame like the OEM speaker - not a thick plastic one.

Conversely, someone has made a printable spacer. Not sure if it is for early or late door panels. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1132372

Thanks, I'll look at that.
