S2 oil change

I know there are Lots of oil threads out there, so I don't want to start another.....but I do want to know if anyone adds a ZDDP additive to std oil? If so, what kind? Currently have Brad Penn 20W-50 and a Mahle filter in there.
Any other oil brand recommendations? Regarding the method, I was planning on not jacking the car up as I can get to the drain plug easily. I will punch the hole in the filter before I remove, but will I need to remove the forward pan on the bottom to clean up? Will use rags around the base to avoid spillage. I having been changing all my cars for years, however, the 944 seems to be a bit of a challenge.

i want to know how you can change the oil without lifting up the car, unless you are a flounder, how do you fit under there?

A suction tube down the oil dipstick tube - have done it that way several times when in a hurry...Does not let you check out things under the car though.

If your S2 still has the engine pan, you will need to lift the front of the car.

I have tried many times to save time by packing the bottom of the oil filter with lots of rags to catch the oil only to find that when I pull the rags out, some of the oil still got on the pan.

Brad Penn is good oil. No additional additives required. I change my oil/filter at about 3500 miles. Mahle filter is the best for the oil antidrain back valve.

High mileage cars over 140K, even with regular oil changes should have the rod bearings changed. This is required especially if the oil cooler gaskets fail and coolant mixes with the oil -per Porsche. Many threads on spun rod bearings.

Repeating what Cocacolakidd said, it is a good time to check other parts under the car. Just good maintenance.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I'll put it on ramps and remove the pan, good points about checking things out. Just wanted to avoid the low front against the ramps and rear batwing interferance with ground........Going with Mahle/Brad Penn, seems to be just right for this car.

Have anyone had luck with punching the hole in the back of the filter to create air flow, or let it drain overnight to avoid spillage downt the side of the engine, or is this just inevitable?

Only have around 2k since last oil change, but it was a hot summer in the midAtlantic. Car has 47K on it now, I want to keep it in prime running condition.

What about tranny fluid change? Whats the frequency and what do you folks use?

I have punched a hole in the filter for faster drainage in the past, but have found that to let it sit for a bit, wrap rags around it is a better way to do it. In the past when I punched a hole in the filter I found this breaks up the inside of the filter and allows allot of debris to flow back into the engine.

I want to keep all of the bad stuff out of the motor so I do not punch holes in the filter any more...I finally got tired of the stupid filter mounted up-side down, and all of the spillage. So I placed a remote filter adapter lower in the side of the chassy - so now it comes off without a drop spilled, and from underneath - the way it could have been in the first place.

I'm using Valvoline Synthetic 90 in my Transaxle, and change it out every three years - it's easy enough to do and not that expensive.

I came up with this ramps solution since my 968 is so low(see pics)Two 3/8" corrugated aluminium plates 9&3/4" wide x12" long, as you can see there is a back-up plate also aluminium 1/4" thick.

__I change mine every 30/35K miles or every two years but really there is no set frequency,it will depend how you use your car.Read your owner manual & see what is recommended for it usually it will be 75w90.Brands I'm not gone to go into that, will just name a few which seem to be popular among 944s owners.Red- line/Swepco/Valvoline/Castrol.

Guys, lots of interesting information and nice pics but nothing to address the real question here... do you add ZDDP = NO for a 1989 Pcar... you are better off just keeping with Mobil 1. Second question... I personally decided to upgrade to the Canton cartridge filter unit when I replaced my motor mount for the second time and completely cleaned the engine compartment from bottom to top. For you Mahle filter folks, I suggest you make a call to your local Napa store and get the form-a-funnel drain tool. It is far better than all the rags and paper towels you can stuff in there.

schmedes1,

First part I agree.

But...
The op is using Brad Penn 20-50, no need to change to Mobil 1.

+100 on that, first time doing an oil & filter change since I got it on my 968 today without making a huge mess .Even though I had the car a couple feet of the ground it was a PITA job to do compare doing it on my ex 944.The bat wing stay on but the middle (plastic) & rear (aluminum) shield had to come out in order to get to at the drain plug & clean what ever little oil drip from the filter. Not sure but I think the S2 doesn't have the aluminum rear shield can somebody confirm this please.Anyway took me about three hours to do the job including clean up,also a good idea is to remove the coil wire from the dist cap & shove it out of the way in order to have better access to the filter.LOl next time I'm getting a darn flounder to help me out.

The rear side shields are plastic on the S2's

The problem with getting a Flounder to help out is they always want to many Anchovies, and you have to flood the garage floor with salt water up to about 6".

What about a halibut? all they need is a shotgun shell to the face and they'll be quite

PS: a shot gun shell, a spear and a bunch of clubbing is what I find does the trick.

Rhino ramps are like $40 at AutoZone...Don't get the ones from Harbor Freight there cheap, and I use Valvoline 20w50 Racing VR-1 (conventional, not synthetic)..Has some ZDDP in it, or Castrol 20w50 with a bottle of STP blue oil treatment...

jep__Stuff as much paper towel as you can all around & underneath the filter before you take it out, cover your fender & anything else you migth think the oil is gone to drip on including your steering boot.Don't forget to disconnect the coil wire if not it's gone to be in your way when you pull the filter out.Have fun
