Fuel Sender Replace or Repair -

Hey David - A new fuel tank sending unit can also be expensive in the states. Some owners prefer a new part while others try and locate a used part from a salvage yard. If you are handy with a soldering iron - another possibility is for you to simply replace the broken loop of single strand resistance wire that the float slides along. I've done this on several 911 and 928 cars. The whole assembly is easily taken apart. If the nut is a bit rusty at the lower end of the guide rod - soak it a few times in some chemical rust eater or naval jelly. Then gently work on it with an old tooth brush and apply some penetrating oil before removing the nut.

Perhaps you can Google an instrument repair shop that will either replace the loop of "Single Strand" resistance wire or they might even sell you a couple of feet ($3.50/foot) of the correct resistance wire that you can solder back in place yourself. Your fuel gauge is looking for about:
3.0 ohms = float at the top of travel - fuel gauge shows full
70 ohms = float at bottom of travel - fuel gauge shows empty

Here are a couple of UTube videos showing a static resistance check of the float movement. Although normally the "Low Fuel Level Light Switch" or foot does not need any attention, the repair of a broken switch is included....... The float outer protective barrel has been removed for this demonstration.
