Need help removing pinion gear

Hello, I need some help in trying to remove the pinion gear from my transmission (see picture below). The shop manual is a bit vague on the steps. I see there is a large 36mm nut on the end of the pinion shaft. Is this supposed to be removed with a standard 36mm socket? The manual talks about special tool 9148 but don't see how it fits into the removal of the pinion gear.

Thanks

special tool 9148 is number 2 in the picture - looks like a puller that screws into two of the socket bolt holes... maybe?

Here is a screenshot from the manual. I just re-read it again and it looks like it just wants the bolt from this special tool to use as a centering pin for the puller. I'm trying to be cautious as to not damage anything so trying to look for some feedback from people who have done this.

After reading the manual this is what I understood as far as steps. Do you agree or I'm I missing something?

1. Remove 36mm nut from pinion shaft
2. screw in a M10x30 bolt on end of the pinion haft
3. use puller to remove pinion gear from shaft

Thanks

I finally got it to load. Pelican's site didn't like the PNG extension for some reason.

In any of these pulling operations I direct a heat gun to the gear for sometimes up to 20 minutes to make it much easier. The last G50 trans I did, the service manual recommended 100-140C which I used two guns for because it was a hard pull... the next gear came right off.

Thanks for that tip! I will keep that in mind when I try and remove mine.

yea - while writing my post above i was thinking that doesn't look like much of a puller - i guess any M10 x 30 bolt with a hole drilled in the end could be used - and i'd guess the same bolt could be used for the install - funny how they call for the "special" bolt for install
