Gee... What are these rubber chunks?

I pulled the starter off as suggested and found these. Thanks for the tips guys!!! How involved will it be to install a new spring clutch? I also managed to break the 8mm nut stud and the short (3 inch) ground between the starter and solenoid. I guess thats my luck. I am new and haven't ordered from Pelican. I assume they have good service. This BBS sure is awesome, I would not feel comfortable working on my P-car without sound advice. Mike

Don't know where the rubber chunks came from but one guess is the rubber donut around the altenator cable.

It might be from that rubber seal that covers the gap between the bell housing and the iron starter mount. Mine disintergrated too and I sealed it with a bead of clear silicon.

Cool Hurling Chunks

Those are probably from the rubber hub on the clutch disk. The evidence that you have in your hand indicates that the hub is failing. The good news is that a spring center disk is now available for your car. The bad news is that you have to start at the back bumper and work your way forward to replace the clutch! You will have to remove the transaxle, unbolt and push rearward the torque tube, IMPORTANT! remove the two sensors that read the flywheel position and the spacer tube in one of the holes they mount in. Then you can pull the starter, bell housing and finally get to the clutch. While you are in there, replace the pilot bearing (centers the drive shaft and allows it to turn in the end of the crankshaft), check the throwout bearing fork for wear and check the rear main seal for leaks. Oh yes, you will have to remove the exhaust system from the headers back also. It is a lot of work, takes a GOOD tool set and lots of thought and patience.
You will need a floor jack or a transmission jack to lower and replace the transaxle.

Good Luck!

The chunks were from the rubber clutch disc. The job is now done.... not any fun but the car sure is smooth now. Thanks for your replys!

Wrong car, Michael. I thought you were talking about a 928 since this is the 928 section. Disregard my post.
