928 intermittently dies

Early this summer, a work colleague was driving her beautiful '86 928 at highway speed and felt what she described as a transmission clunk and subsequent release of drive power. She shifted to neutral and back and everything returned to normal for awhile. Shortly thereafter, the same thing. A some time later, the car completely died. The starter would turn but no ignition at all. After an indeterminate period, the car started and ran fine. She is quite sure if she took a trip of any length, the engine would fail again. She is about to have the 928 towed to a mechanic. I suggested she might be able to resolve this or at least get a good handle on the possible cause in her driveway.

Given my Porsche is a 911 with a DME, I thought the brain might be the issue here. Does anyone have any thoughts on the cause of this problem and/or options to resolve?

Thanks.

Cool

On any of the older cars (mine is a 1983) I recommend changing out all of the relays.

I had one that was controlling the electronic fuel injection, and it was dying a slow death, and eventually let me down. I took it apart and there was light corrosion inside, and one of the ultra thin copper wires wrapped around the internal solenoid was corroded all the way through. Do this now and save yourself a world of aggrivation later.
