Just Bought a 928

I picked up my new baby yesterday.

I managed to get it at a reasonable price because it is left hand drive (not seen as a positive thing here in Australia), has no service history and the odometer wasn't working so I could not verify the mileage. Plus it was a s2 with the non-euro (ie, low compression) engine. I had it checked by a Porsche mechanic who said it was in good condition - all 8 cylinders were either 160 or 165 under the compression test.

As it has no service history, I am starting from scratch. I figure I will need to change coolant, engine oil, diff oil, automatic gearbox oil, spark plugs, power steering fluid, brake fluid, fuel filter, air filter. and cam belt. I will do as much as I can and then get a mechanic to do the rest.

Have I missed anything that I should check or change? I need daily driver reliability here.

Does anyone have any experiene in terms of improvd performance by running a K&N air filter or using Bosch super 4 spark plugs?

All replies will be appreciated.

K&N filter is a waste of money. I had one on and didn't notice ANY difference except for the occasional odd large piece of debris that got past the filter to get stopped by the MAF screen. I'm back to the stock filter now.

Regular platinum, single tip spark plugs will do just fine. The others won't increase performance, but they may last longer.

In addition to changing the transmission oil, make sure you also change the filter and gasket.

After you do all that stuff, be prepared to start replacing anything rubber under the hood. New ownership usually goes hand-in-hand with discovering and fixing vacuum leaks. It's not hard (except on your bank account if you pay someone else to do it).

Congratulations on your new toy!!!!

Ebs... with the cam belt you might as well replace the water pump. Be
sure to readjust the cam belt after 1,500-2,000 miles. Also, for a few $$
change the air pump filter cartridge.

Enjoy.

G'luck.

By all means get that cam belt taken care of NOW. I totally agree about the K&N air filter, the informed wisdom these days is they are a waste of money, especially on a 928 which has a huge filter box anyway.

I would change out the critical relays for fuel pump/fuel injection brain. All the small vac lines under the intake manifold will be brittle and will break if you look at them wrong. Gently tighten the oil pan bolts (did I say "gently"??? yes). Use good oil, I recommend Mobil-1 15W50 and Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 gear lube in the transaxle/differential

congrats, give us a shout if you need any help. I've been driving mine to work every day and it sure has a way to put a smile on your face twice a day!

The motor is good for 300,000 to 500,000 miles, depending on the care given to it. With good synthetic oils, you are close to a "no wear" situation with that silicon impregnated aluminum bore.

Congrats,

P

many of us like to do cross referencing on our problems, and here is a great second opinion

I have used K&N filters in three vehicles. when in the 928 I notice a slight change in response, I am happy to have it and prefer it to a normal dry paper filter. the biggest change in performance I have experienced was when I installed a K&N in a Jaguar XJ6 .. there was an obvious change in acceleration and power through out its RPM range, i was very happy. I also use the K&N in a Ford Taurus SHO , again only a slight change in how easy the engine breaths .. like the 928 , the SHO is already a great performer in stock form.
I have never had any debris get past my K&N filter.I don't think it is a waste of money(its not so expensive that you have to sell an organ to a 3rd world country), that's just my opinion.
you could buy it , try it, and if you don't like it -
SELL IT ON EBAY ..LOL

if you live near dry dusty areas, i feel the oil inpregnated K&N may even grab and hold more. dirt sticks to oil so much more than dry paper.

have fun and congrats on your beautiful new ride.
