heat from center console
 

I have a 1986 928s automatic. The shifter area gets very hot, and when a window is opened, hot air blow up into the car from the boot. I have a rebuilt torque tube and had the foam insulation replaced. It is no better. Is this normal?

is your car overheating or running hotter than usual? i have an 84 928s auto trans and i also get a good amount of hot air coming from my shifter area.you may want to consider a trans fluid cooler if the heat is excessive.

No the car is not running hot. I am not sure the if the heat is coming from the tranny, torque tube or engine. Thanks.

I have an '85 928 and my center console also gets warm. I had the entire car checked out recently and was told everything was fine.

I've got the same problem on my '90 S4, I read somewhere that this is caused by worn motor mounts wich let the motor lie lower than it should causing a leak of hot air into the cabin. I had my mountings checked and they are badly worn. I still have to replace them but it seems logical.

Yep, that's being caused by motor mounts that have been compressed. Even with the new insulation, there's still a gap for heat from the engine to make its way up and through. With the sunroof open, a vacuum is created, pulling even more air through.

A quick fix might be to pull the shifter and boot off and take a rag or something to wrap around the base. This will slow or eliminate the flow of air.

You'll still need to check and replace the mounts. Using a rag to plug the gap where the air is exiting is not a permanent fix.

On my '83 manual transmission, there is heat, but there is also a lot of foam installed by the manufacturer to manage the heat. Naturally, when you're only a few inches away from the exhaust pipe, I'm reasonably sure that's where the heat is coming from, so it's probably a typical situation. I would be sure the insulation is in there as it should be, and then just motor on.

I got my car back yesterday after replacing the motor mounts at considrable cost looking forward to the fresh air feeling driving with the sunroof open and perhaps even a window or two . My dissapointment was big when I found the heat is still there.
I did gain a huge unexpected sillence though. The engine noise is redused by about 70%. The worshop showed me the old mountings the were worn right trough and the engine was siting metal on metal.

I'll be removing the centre consol shortly to see if I can cure the heat problem wile at the same time replacing the in dash temp sensor.

When you open the window and especially the sunroof they create a vacuum and pull the heat into the cabin via shifter/center console. Do a search in Rennlist.com and you will see many posts there. Try it with windows and sunroof closed and you will notice that the console is nice and cool.

i have a 1986 928s . i had the same issue of heat occasionally coming from the shifter area . some of my insulation was missing from a rodent that made it it's home during winter storage. i also have an after market 5 speed look shifter and boot for my automatic. A Dealer suggested that the heat i was feeling occasionally was most likely from THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER which produces lots of heat when / if the car runs rich ..the converter will burn up extra fuel in the exhaust thus producing excess heat. the converter is directly under the shifter area.

Hmmm. I may have to check this. I used to get some heat from the center area. Since then I replaced the catalytic converters with a bypass pipe. Now that I think about it, there's a lot less heat around the floor now, especially under my feet.
