Porsche Crest T-belt tension

Hey all!
Just tensioned the timing belt on my 80. Just want to know what everyone thinks of this. I installed new belt tensioner pulleys water pump and stuff at 123,600 miles. Right at 124,000 I checked the tension and it didn't need tightening. checked today at 124,928 (pretty cool mileage huh?) and it was quite loose.....I didn't check the total turns but would guess at least 1.5 to 2 turns. What would you all recommend I check again? I've got no problem doing it as often as it needs as it only takes a short time! I'm thinking maybe every couple thousand from here out! Oh by the way....wouldn't you guys like to see more 928 activity here?? Me too!!

The belt will stretch initially and needs to be re-tensioned at about 5-6K miles (as I recall); after that a yearly check will be fine. No harm in checking it more often if you like.

More traffic here would be great; Pelican does us a great service by hosting this BBS.

Porsche recommends re-tension after 1500-2000 miles after a new belt is installed.
Did you use the tension tool to check the correct tension?

Thanks for the correction John, I thumbed back and forth thru the FSM and couldn't find the spec.

Porsche Crest

I used the inexpensive tool from 928 intl. I checked at 400 miles with no noticeable discrepancy then again aat 1300 miles with a pretty good amount of adjustment needed. with probably less than 5,000 a year hearafter I'll probably check it every 6 months or so. On another note....would anybody know if an 80 U.S. spec would have slotted rotors? Mine has slotted up front and plain out back......hmmm

Check the tension one more time and if there is no change I would just check it once a year.
Slotted rotors were not stock on a 1980, those are aftermarket rotors.
