What 928 do I buy?

Im from the 944 BBS, and Im thinking of selling my 944 and upgrading to the 928. So I need some info from you guys. What are the maintenance problems on the 928 that you have to deal with? Does the 928 have the same timing belt issues that the 944 does, Im assumeing it does since the 944 is half the 928. The engine seams very thight in the engine compartment, is it as easy to work on as the 944. And finally what would be the top 5 928's to buy in order to give me several prices ranges to choose from. Thanks in advance for any info you have and anything else you can think of that I need to know would be great.

The early 928s don't blow the motor if they lose the timing belt which is a major advantage. They also cost less. The one i have for sale in my sig is $4200. It's getting harder to find nice early 928 euro 5spds.

The later ones have more power and they are interference motors. The newer they are the more expensive they are. The GTS goes for well over $20k.

I'm presently featuring a 1983 928-S on my wasserpumper forum (it's one of three I own for personal conveyance and pure joy of driving).

Here's just a taste of what's there for the 928 and 944 enthusiasts like me http://www.network54.com/Forum/426130/message/1121975061
Turn up your speakers, happy hunting, lots of stuff there in the MASTER INDEX files. I strongly suggest keeping the 944, and just getting the 928 too. There are lots of similarities.

If you can fix one, you can fix the other. However, the 928 transaxle is much more difficult to remove, due to the Weissach rear-wheel steering configuration. The whole rear suspension has to come out. I've done it, still love the car.

regards, P

Hey ..P thanks for the link, that is exactly the info I was looking for. Oh, and I do plan on keeping my 944. Its in to good of shape for me to sell. What year 928 under $10000 would you suggest, and what engine do you like best the 2 valve or the 4 valve.

I'd personally go for an S4. You do end up paying more for a good specimen, but it's almost the top of the heap in 928 evolution, and not as much as a GTS.
