1984 928S...water pump/timing belt questions
Just traded my 1967 912 for a very clean, low mileage 1984 928S. Has 78,000 original miles, and appears to have had the w/pump and timing belt done at least once. I do not have it in my possession yet (in transit this week). I think I read that '84 and older 928's do not have interference engines...is that correct? I also think I've read the pump and belt should be done every 40k miles or so...is that correct? What kind of money am I looking at for parts and are there any places recommended to get rebuilt pumps or is that a bad idea? What should the job cost at a private shop (my guy only works on Porsche's)? I know these cars can have electrical issues, but what other things should I be concerned with? The p/steering rack is good (no leaks). Thanks, Dan

Yes the 84 and older 16 valve engines are non-interference. The maintence scehdule for the belt is every 60,000 miles with adjustment every 15,000 miles. We with 32 valve interference engines though change the timing belts every 45,ooo miles. The belts cost about $50 new oem but not from Porsche. I think dealer price is $90. A rebuilt water pump can be had for about $120 if you have a rebuildable core. New pumps are in the $350 range. I hope this helps. Welcome to the club.
