high oil pressure

I have just purchased a 1987 S4. The oil pressure goes straight to 5 when I start the car. At operating temperature the pressure gauge shows around 4 when idle. As soon as the RPM climbs the pressure gauge maxes out. I've never owned a 928 before but I'm assuming that this is higher than normal. Should I worry?

Nothing to worry about, that's pretty much the norm.

There is no such thing as too much oil pressure(or at least, not until it starts blowing out gasket seals, lol).

Jnyman, my '88 928 S4 does exactly the same thing as yours. I was somewhat worried too, at first. I believe its like they say - quite normal.

I replaced my factory gague with aftermarket VDO mechanical gauges.

When i start my 928 it pins the needle on the gauge, which goes up to 100psi.

Thanks, I live in Germany so I am able to drive the car at high speeds for long periods of time. I was worried that keeping the pressure that high would start blowing seals or gaskets. Does everyone use 15W-50? I thought that might be part of the high pressure issue.

15-50 Mobil 1 is one of the top choices in oil for the 928. It's almost certainly the most popular.
