Help-Overheating

Help! Is their anyone who might be able to give me some insight into what might be happening with my 87 S4. Overheating when i am driving in the car or just sittting at idle I can hear the cooling fans come on for only a moment and the car starts to overheat. When i get out of the car with the hood open or closed, the fans come on as normal and the temp. falls back to normal. Does anyone know if their is a pressure sensor in the seat that might be related to cooling system. I have checked all the normal systems related ie: temp sensors, rad., hood switch, etc.

Fixing any intermittant electrical problem on the 928 should start with cleaning of your ground conections, fuses and relay contacts. AFAIK there is no other direct relation between the seats, door switches and the cooling fans. Initially I would check the battery ground strap for a good clean connection to the body. A bad connection there can affect the high draw circuits like the cooling fans. Next I would clean the fuse and relay contacts, then the fan grounds.

Is it possible the radiator has lost its efficiency?

Flaps should open when the car is not running. Disconnect the plug . I know very little about 928 electrics, but when unassociated circuts seem to work together, it is usually a faulty ground.

Interesting observation on the pump impeller...never seen this myself, but I can see how it could happen. I have seen photos of pumps with the cast iron impellers where the bearings in the pump got so bad as to allow the impeller to cut into the mating face of the block. Most rebuilds are plastic these days.

Not sure where this car is located...my fans haven't run here for months because it is winter and quite cold. As always though, the basics apply: Pump, Thermostat, Radiator. Some SC cars have been known to run without the fan packs without issues.

Thanks for the heads up on the controler. I think this may be the problem. I havent had time to go too 928 Intl. to check this out, but will soon. In the mean time i was able to locate which pins control the Fans, hooked up a toggle switch and am running them manualy until i get down there.
THANKS, ROBERT
