trans question
I am changing out the auto. trans in my '84. and everything went ok for my first time except 3 things 1:the control cable, which I apparently broke taking it out of the old trans. some sort of spring poped out and no rod came up like my instructions said. so can I just get a good used cable and replace it or is there any thing else I should do? 2: splin clamp the hole in the clamp that the bolt goes through does not line up with the groove in the shaft . any way to adjust that or did I do something wrong? 3: "adjusting trans. suspension" my instructins talk about shims but I am pretty sure there were'nt any when I removed it. but the square washers dont line up with the spot they were in before? Any help would be appreciated

arklight53,
First of all thank you for such an indepth response it sounds like you really know your stuff. 1. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171085550.jpg yes I think that is the same washer. here is a pic .I think one bolt is a little aft of the hole maybe the same as the clamp bolt and the other is a little forward. 2. I did move the clamp all around but the spline in the sleeve are what aren't lining up. The groove on the spline does line up with the hole in the clamp no matter how you turn the clamp. 3. Yes , I pulled the old tranny('84) and as far as I know the replacement is from an '83. And I dropped the whole exhaust/suspension and let the torque tube just hang there. I got a porsche manual on cd which where I read about the shims it says to "lift the trans. in the middle of the case far enough that there is a gap between both the mounts and the cross member and measure the difference between the two and take it up with shims." And that there needs to be a 1mm gap between the case and the top of the mount. So thats where I'm at, I just don't know how critical that adjustment is or how to get that clamp bolt to go in that groove on the spline. I really appreciate your advice . cj |
Well thats good to hear that its no big deal about the square washer but the one in the pic. I took is'nt like the one in your pic. it is solid all the way around. About the clamp coller , It sounds like I screwed up all the way around. First off I did let the trans. hang one the torque tube, mainly because my floor jack looses hydraulic pressure so when I left it under the trans. it slowly lowered it untill it was just hanging.Secondly I did'nt clean the coller and splines or lube it before putting it back together. It's starting to become clear why the thing is'nt going back together so easily. I sure hope there is still a way to finish it without taking it back out. Thanks again , you have really helped me out.

That is good advice. I actually did clean the new trany. but it was still hanging from the engine hoist by straps so I could'nt get to all of the underside but it was about 90% clean when I put it in . I wish I did check out the bearing and lube where before I put it in but I did replace the torque converter seal (hard to find at regular parts stores). So is there any way to get that spline a little further back? It looks like it only needs about an 1/8" more to allow the bolt to pass through.
Thanks again. cj |
I finally got it sun. afternoon by sticking a bolt in the hole as far as it wood go and then unbolting it from the torque tube and prying the trans back a little then taking the bolt out and tightning the torque tube bolts again and then the hole lined up. So now I'm over 2 of the 3 problems but still not sure about the control cable that broke. Here is a pic.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171340842.jpg

It's the new tranny. old cable. When I pulled it out of the old tranny something popped and flew out . it sounded like a spring and a small piece of metal but I could'nt find anything. And looking up into the white cable end there is'nt anything to hook onto the rod in the trans.
