What does it cost to get a 928 Automatic Transmission Rebuilt? I'm still lurking on the sidelines doing the research on the 928 (drive my 911 daily) and wondered the cost to get them rebuilt. With my 911 (5 speed), I have the expertise available to me to do the rebuild myself. Not so on automatic transmissions.

What does it cost to get it rebuilt once one goes bad? Any any advice on what year transmission are good, better, best?

Depends on the area you live in.

But, I would say 1-2K. I had the a/t done in my MB 500 SEC and it was $1,300usd, the 928 has basically the same trany!

There is a guy in Denver that I would recommend if your need one done. I would have to look him up as I have forgotten what his last name and shop name is. His first name is John and his last name starts with an "E"?

I wish he lived in the Houstion area, I would sweep the shop floors just to have a chance to learn what this man knows about Porsche cars.

I know of John. I think he's semi retired but still shows up every day to his shop. Nice guy, didn't realize he knew 928's. I should stop by the shop one day and pick his brain. I believe he initially worked for Grady Clay (had Denver's first independent Porsche repair shop).

Thanks for the info. I'm one of these people that do major research before stepping into anything. I always want to know worst case scenario, especially on things that I can't work on.

Still haven't figured out if I could tackle the engine but think I could. Figure it can't be any harder than the 911 engine from what I've seen and read. But then, I've never seen one close up so I'll continue to prod.

if you've been flogging your nine one one, you can handle a 928......

they are just like the carrera varients, just more technically challenging as the year models progress......

FWM's, PET and technical service bulletins are a must, and they are readily available on CD from Jim Morehouse for around $80.

if you want a mechanical challenge, I suggest the early style Euro.

if you want a a garage queen (and can afford it), a GTS is the way to go.

in between this madness, you have the S4.

I was looking at the slushbox out of a 928 the other day, surprised me, right on the side it had Mercedes Benz and a part number in a non Porsche format.

Isn't it fairly rare that one of them needs a rebuild?

yes, Porsche did use the MB box.

rare for a rebuild???

think about it....over 20 years since built, no telling if it was ever serviced, fluid probably looks like grease, etc....

Kind of like my brake/hydraulic clutch system. first time I flushed it, the fluid was so black I thought someone had put used engine oil in the reserviour. this led to completely replacing all hydraulic components, except for the metal lines. I mean everything, and several flushes to get the old stuff out.....

and when your talking about hyd clutch stuff, or brake systems, it's just best to replace everything in the system and start new. it's just cheap insurance.


like everything else discussed here, I wouldn't stress it too much if I even suspected a reliability issue.

if it's leaking (including the cooler lines), you can just imagine what the inside looks like, even though the fluid is clear. the pan might be full of shavings, worn clutch facings, bad internal seals (if any), etc.....

Pulled one out of my s4 in an MB shop-Identical to 560 MB should bolt together! Ratios may be different but the shafts are the same.

When I was in his shop, he had three 928 cars of different MY's torn down and one he was finishing a trans oil change. Of the three he had torn down, one was a motor job, one was a trany job and the other I don't remember.

I also don;t remember what the other guys name was that was most likely his head wrench, but he too knows the 928 like the back of his hand.

The 928 trans is designed by MB and the diff's are designed by ZF!

You know no offense but still dont know the answer to the original question, the reason im intrested is ive got the same problem, and ive checked abt. 5 of used ones and 4 had the same prob. Slipping in reverse, so im wondering maybe go another way for my 82 928 any ideas. Thanks tom

The number of people that reliably rebuild a 928 transmission has gone DOWN in the last 8 years, and prices have gone up. Good used transmissions are still not hard to find.

Change the fluid, keep the fluid level where it belongs, and they just keep working fine.

When they are abused and fail, many times simple repairs well short of rebuilding are possible.

Hey, thats excatly what the guy i bought it from said. He was honest about the cars cond.i bought it knowing its trans needed work, i just applied the worse case poss. And evalude the car on nada. And i still felt it was a good deal. Im just having trouble makeing the dissission where to go. One thing he did say is he put someyhing special in the trans. To help thanks so much for the comments, foreman. ONE OTHER THING, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ONE IVE JUST SEEN PICS. BUT ITS A MONSTER GOES FROM THE CENTER OF THE REAR END TO THE BACK OF THE ENG. I BELEVE SOME OF THESE PLACES YOU SEND THEM THE TRANS THEY REBUILD AND SEND IT BACK, WHICH MEANS YOU PULL IT AND REINSTALL IT, PROBLEY SAVE ON LABOR. THANKS FOREMAN.

Might be worth a try to drop the pan, put in a new filter and fluid. Maybe $50. As they say "the auto trans is the most neglected service" on most cars.

Abt 150 miles straight west pretty much on the mississippi river id give my left for a good beef sandwhitch same goes for pizza oh well back to bis. Ive got a nice 85 collectors series 4 spd, and an 84 i got by accident couldnt belive it was that cheap on ebay woke up next morning to congradulations. Also a 89 sportster all stock. Great on all. I am just across the big lake here. Got my 928S also by chance. A friend said a guy was selling off cars from his Fathers estate, would I be interested in the 928S stored for 19 years and only 37K miles, one owner. I said OK, next day they delivered the car to me, deal done. I could have also bought a Jag XK8 with 2,300 miles on it. Ok on your location, I have cousins in Kewanee. You should be able to get a rebuilt trans or have yours fixed with a guarantee. I can see Willis (Sears) Tower across the Lake on a clear day, about as close to Chicago as I want to get!

Just noticed you had a de tomaso. How was that., that along with a ferrari,maseradi even a xke have been a dream of mine. Its all wayne carenis fault he keeps picking up ferraris all over the place. All way to expensive for me. I picked up this928 for 3650 so ive got some room for the trans. But i think ill try changing all the fluids first along with the filter, thanks, foreman. Ps. The Pantera was a nice car and I wish I kept it. It is no Porsche 928 however. It had an Italian made body and Ford engine with German ZF trans. It was not made like a 928 engineering or quality wise. The body had real rust issues, insufficient brakes, wheel bearings and electrical problems. The 928 can out handle it hands down. But it's value has soured and it has beautiful lines. Never heard of the cheata.

Look it up on google, i think youll fall in love, theres a comp in one of the western states offering a 'kit' for 35 / 40 grand and i dont think that includes the engi first saw it on one of those gear head shows on sat and sun morning. Glad to hear the good comments on the porsche gunna show it to the wife. Might take some of the heat off. One other thing the guy i bought it from raved abt. The bow pow radio i think its a peice of any one got a different opinion, thanks foreman

After Ford quit importing the Pantera, some other company made a few. The original is not a kit car. I would not buy any kit car. As for a replacement radio and one that looks good with plenty of features, look at the JVC. I posted some pictures of mine on here some years ago. Mine is a single DIN, touch screen, bluetooth, DVD, etc.
