brake caliper service

This is an experience you don't want to repeat.

I had replaced my 1980 euro braking system for a later S4 big brake suspension/brake system.

Everything went very smoothly until Monday AM.

I backed the shark out of the driveway, hits the brakes and the was banging noise on the right front (no, I didn't hit anything--should have got out and looked, but it was very cold that AM and figured it was just old age creakin' going on...... ).

Went thru the gears towards the next block, hit the brakes and OH *****!!!!! The brake pedal went straight to the floor.

It turns out, the right side caliper bolts had backed completely out, letting the caliper slam to the front and pulling the brake line from the caliper, depositing brake fluid everywhere, and----- no brakes!!!!

So, if you're servicing your calipers, make damn sure you Locktite the caliper bolts when reinstalling them, and make sure you bring the bolts to the proper torque as well.

Even though I tightened the bolts quite tight, they backed off. Luckily, I was able to use the hand brake to stop the car and get it back to the house without crunching anything.

This could have been really bad exiting turn one at over 100mph and no brakes!!!! With Porsche's hydraulic clutch system, once the brake fluid is gone you've got no clutch either.....

regards---rhjames

it wasn't fun, and the parts won't be here until Monday because of who else? UPS. (delayed by a late train----if they trucked it, it'd be here)

Oh well, just be sure to do the Locktite thing if you r & r your calipers......

took the wheels off again, for several reasons, and yes the caliper bolts on the left side had backed off as well (theywere just finger tight-----OH, *****).

installed new speed bleeders on all four corners (and clutch slave cylinder), put Locktite on all caliper mounting bolts, and torqued them all to 65 ft lbs.

now if UPS would just deliver my s/s brake lines I can get back to enjoying the ride......

Retorque your wheels after 1 hr of driving as well. I still think you were lucky. Good catch.

thanks for the advise, DD, on re-torquing the wheels as well.

learned that trick from many years of running alloy wheels on my big rig.

even though the Porsche wheels aren't as big as my Peterbilt's, I still re-torque them as well.

Damn strange the caliper bolts backed off, as I thought I tightened them pretty good, and I had not driven the car very far......

At any rate, they're properly Locktite-d, and properly torqued now!

thanks again----
