Door Panels

I have a 1978 928 and the door panels are pretty bad. They have pulled away from the windows and the arm rest no longer hold.

Are door panels interchangeable between years or do I have to look for 1978 panels?

yes, door panels are interchangeable, although the later models will have two speakers in the upper panel instead of just one. this may necessitate cutting an additional hole in the inner door sheetmetal for the additional speaker, but it's no big deal.

I myself am replacing my very bad original door panels with a pair from a later S4, although I have yet to install them as they are at my upholstery shop being recovered in new leather and carpet.

cost on a replacement pair can run anywhere from $100 per panel to upwards of $500 per, depending on condition, leather or vinyl, etc.....

you can find them at 928 Int'l, DC Automotive, occasionally eBay, and others.

I have a contact on the East coast that may be able to help you as well---PM me if need be.

Good luck----

Are the fiberboard "panels" damaged, or is the material covering it just pulling loose? No need to replace what you can fix, and the early style, no round speaker grilles, is 78-83, with 84 the first year of the new style.

Replacement speakers can be a pain to find on the early style unless you are willing to cut the metal of the door because the factory speaker is very shallow with a small magnet diameter. I decided to keep the early style so my 83 looks more like an 83.

Thanks for the quick response. It is more than just cosmetics, the driver's side panel is wasted.

I have another question reagarding the center console a/c vents. My vents are brittle and no longer operational, stuck blowing towards the passenger side. I looked into getting a replacement but my vents look different then what I have found. I have 2 small vents on a panel with about 4 inches of empty plastic on the left side. What I have seen is a panel with two vents and a spot for a knob or 2 vents that span the entire width of the panel. Are these interchangeable?
