Windshield?!

Hi all.

Gots me an 89 S4 coming, but it needs a windshield.

Seems to be windshields for the 928 are not available from glass shops any more (Here in Canada at least)

I called everywhere around, and they say they are disco'd.
(Although, most places say they were around $400 installed when they could get them)

Porsche can get it from Germany, but to the tune of $1200 + Install!!

Anyhow, anyone know where to get a reasonably priced windshield? Are they still available aftermarket in the US?

It would be nice not to pay $1500 for a windshield (After tax and install!)

Jeremy

Oh good.

Odd not up here in Canada any more.

I guess I will phone a glass dealer somewhere near the border and see if they will ship me one up. At the end of the day it will still be cheaper than getting from Porsche!

I've heard mixed reviews on the Chinese 928 glass...wavy, etc. I've been looking for a glass shop to accommodate a group buy in the northwest at a reasonable price (or ship a bunch of glass to a regional warehouse) but I've been unable to find anyone so far...so if you do, I'd sure like to see what we could do in this area for good priced, non-Chinese glass.

Are talking about the glass from Germany?

It would have to be a great deal, as I am not interested in the $1200+ I was quoted from the Porsche dealer, thats for sure.

Did you find any leads at all? I mean I almost certainly will need the windshield, but not for about 6 weeks. (When the car arrives)

My company has a shipping point in North Dakota, so I can have stuff sent there to then cross the border.

So, I guess if I can help bring the price down, I will be in, but it would have to be pretty close to the aftermarket glass as this car is for resale.

Let me know if you figure something out.

Gorflub,

I currently have a few calls out to some places for myself. I can ask them for you as well.
Where in Canada or North Dakota do you need it?
Any particular tint? Let me know!

Hey, cool, thanks!

Tinti really doesnt matter too terribly much, although I suppose the tint band would be a bonus. Not too interested in paying a lot for it though.....

As far as shipping,

To the USA - Pembina, ND 58271

Canada - Saskatoon, SK S7L7E6

Yeah, if you can wrangle a deal, i would be interested.

Kim et al,

I have about 4 people in the Seattle or Portland OR area that would like a new windshield. None of the contacts that I've made have been able to accommodate us. We were hoping for a group order. If you find a willing selling able to ship, we'd be very interested. Thank you.

Wow.

This windshield thing is a bit bigger of an issue than I thought!

Well, if we can get some sort of deal worked out, I will take 2.

I will hord it until I get another 928!

First of all, not all glass is created equal -- size, well, model year and color can be important.

I am in search of glass for an 86.5, which, (lucky me), has the imbedded antenna.
I spoke with a salvage shop who asked me 'green or bronze tint'...(not the upper band, just the glass in general).

Perhaps we can compile a list for the 'group buy' and present it to shops around the country. I was told today (surprise, surprise) mine was a 'limited' piece.

Thoughts? I will inquire here in the prairie lands of DFW...

Although I have not layed eyes on one myself Chinese glass can be a hit and miss on the clarity of glass I hear. I know my previous 88 had a windshield replacement before I bought the car (which I informed my buyer of) but I don’t recall the glass make. Perhaps I can email the new owner to check for any glass markings as it was a sweet windshield.

As far as the embedded antenna: If the non-antenna glass is the same, and is less expensive, and easier to get, Do it!. You can add an amplified hidden antenna for very little dough.

And I understand about the cars being different. I just happen to know which year is gonna be my next one.

Here is a link to the group buy thread on Rlist, I didn't dig too deep on what current status is, but SEVERAL people seem to have found good glass at very reasonable prices.

Beware - I just had a windshield replacement at the local dealership - wanted it done right with good German Porsche glass (Sigla). $1700 installed (86.5, w/ embedded ant). The glass alone was $1100+, and there was a $100 kit for the install.
The glass is wavy, right in the middle at eye level! It sucks! Also, the dealer didn't actually do the install, but sub'd it out on the lot, and the job was bad (made them redo it). To top it off, caught a stone the next day, and got a star. Was repaired, badly....moral of the story - even good glass is hit/miss, might as well pay the lowest possible dollar for glass and installation that you can find! Even good glass is hit/miss, and as we already knew, dealers disappoint!

Thanks, Guys. I am aware of the Rennlist attempt and the SoCal attempt to get a group buy on glass. I would like to put one together for the NorthWest. Tdealarm, I was referring to PacNW group but was not aware that Adam or anyone might looking too. Doesn't matter to me who can find a good deal on glass, I'd just like to get one before the prices go sky high or the good brands are no longer available. Most places referred to on the lists that i've called have been unwilling/unable to accommodate a group buy for under $400 each

I don't recall where I read it, but picking up the glass from a "glass warehouse" and having it inspected first for any flaws, was advised. Seems like a LOT of costs are in the last 10 miles, wholesale and shipped in bulk glass seems very reasonable. Even with our rare cars, figure most average two or three replacements so far, so a lot of glass must be sold every year.

BTW my guess is glass replaced much more frequently than we might think since its typically free insurance replacement and leaves no paper trail in the service history. OTOH I am pretty sure my 145k mile 83 has original glass with a dealer security etch.

Last I looked it was more than half a dozen guys in SoCal taking their cars to some place in I think Industry, not sure if it was same day or just about the same time or with a prepurchase or something. Nobody storing glass, just deciding not to live with marginal glass when a good deal was around.

Also I believe the group buy only sweetened the deal about 10%, it was already a hot price even for one car. More of a how can everybody get in on this, than a we only get a good price with X number kind of deal.

Group buy or not,

if someone has a glass place that can sell me one in the $400 range, + shipping, I would be rather happy!

Prices from Porsche are high but not as high as you may think.
I sell most of the windshields for around $850. Most have to come by air from Germany and it takes about 2 weeks but they are available.
The ones with the antenna 85 through 88 IIRC are about $20 more expensive.

I called around all my trade sources here in TX looking for an aftermarket one for Risky Biz but could not find one.
