Motor mounts - temporary fix?
 

My motor mounts (1984 Euro S Automatic) are shot I think. Revved the engine, no movement to be seen at all, so I presume they need replacement.

I was looking on John Pirtle's site for a description how to replace, but I remember seeing a photo of a rubber block placed to relieve the immediate transfer of engine movement to the chassis.
I'd like to do that while it's winter, and replace the mounts when it's summer again - it's getting too cold to spend long working on the car at the moment.

Does anyone know where I can get this part?

I've personally used the Jager Engineering "speed mount" as I think they call it, and have had success about 50% of the time. By success, I mean a 100% perfect result! The other 50% of the time, 0% results. The repair for this item is much less time consuming and obviously much more cost effective for a short term fix.

Now there is, of course, the infamous Ford Motor Co. motor mount that is widely used by 928 owners that is identical to the much higher priced 928 motor mount. The repair is still identical, but the part is much, much less, making it a serious contender for a complete and much less expensive full repair.

The choices are out there, it's just up to you what your needs are and how much money your willing to spend to get it done.

both thanks for the info. I'll go the Speed Mount way for now (I don't have a garage, live in the middle of France, so any major work is going to have to wait until winter is over).

I'll give the Ford motor mount a go when spring comes around.

I have just ordered the Speed Mounts, so that will keep me quiet until sunny days arrive again. I hope I'm one of the 50% success rates.
If you're over in France again (Burgundy), bring a couple of the Corteco mounts, help me put 'em in, and I'll help you consume copious amounts of alcohol :-)

John any chance you or the person that owns the 94 GTS could post some of the details from importing it?

The Ford style motor mounts go in as direct replacements and with the same associated labor as the factory Porsche motor mounts, which is a bit of labor. The speed mount pad just gets poked in with the motor raised a bit, hardly any install time beyond jacking up the car.

I sell the better solid mounts complete with hardware for $35 each and also the Silicone oil pan gasket for $40 while you are in there.
I send plenty of them to France so you have some local experiance to call on.

having just personally "seen" Roger's new solid rubber motor mounts, you should get some from him.

they are far better that the originals.

Thanks all, will do so end of the winter, when I've figured out exactly how the whole operation goes.

In the mean time the SpeedMounts are going in. Will take them out later. Will have to buy another 928 to put them in I suppose.;)

SpeedMounts have gone in. It took about 10 minutes in all, including jacking the car up.

There is a noticeable difference. The engine actually rocks when I accelerate. According to the 'manual' it's supposed to get better as the rubber warms.

We've updated the Speed mount to a new urethane compound that is better at low temperature but still very durable. I put it in a 1990 car and man it was sweet!. The owner is loving how smooth it is.

He also had quite a bit of an oil seepage from the pan gasket when he first got the car and after 3 years of driving with the mount, it has dried up. Not sure why this happened.

I used the speed mount in the past. While it does not compare to the improvement of new mounts, it is a dramatic improvement over nothing at all.

I reccomend it.

I've used both Roger's and the Jager Speed Mounts over the years and have come to this conclusion. The Speed Mount is great for slightly sagging OEM mounts to give back some legitimate support, but if the OEM's are completely gone, the Speed Mounts have no effect. However, Rogers's motor mounts are the inexpensive cure to the completely collapsed OEM's and will truly give back that original feel at a fraction of the OEM's cost. :)

for the new Jager mount we molded it to the exact shape of the crossmember and boosted it up slightly. with a softer compound (yet even more durable) it does a really good job of isolation.

the first material we used (neoprene rubber) will get harder over a couple of years time.

Ahhh, then I cannot speak for the "new" Jager Speed Mounts then. I'd like to hear some more testemonials on them though.......:)
