From the Los Angeles craigslist I found a post from a disabled vet that has a 79 928 with a bad 5 spd, pinon carrier broke, and landlord is telling him the car gets towed if it isn't rolling soon. He sounds like a competent mechanic, and my guess is that he has a G28/03 , anybody think they can help him out with some parts or a broken 03 he could get what he needs out of?

I understand exactly what your saying, and of course it could be a scam. Its not at all the impression I got from exchanging emails, and I figure the nature and extent of his disability is none of my business. My first thought was that it's cool to find someone new to potentially add to our little owners community that knows how to turn a wrench.
OTOH we are talking about some parts for a 79 5 spd transmission, and a long time owner of a 928 that needs some help. If somebody has some parts gathering dust, maybe they should consider getting in touch with the guy directly and deciding for themselves how to proceed. |

Pinion carrier is what the guy called the part, but I see a number on the picture, most likely the casting number of 928 302 263 10 and that seems from an old thread to be the pinion flange 928 302 063 29, and something like $800 from most sources. Good reason for a call for help IMHO.
Below is the image he sent me and his description. ![]() It has a Broken PINION CARRIER. AND The broken Pinion Carrier allowed the Pinion Shaft to move Forward and RUB against the Input shaft. The HUB on the fwd end of the Pinion shaft stack up is galled & the Input shaft is galled where they rubbed together. I do not know if it absolutely necessary to replace the HUB & Input Shaft |
