928S4 Charity auction

Gentlemen,

I am a 911 owner but this caught my eye yesterday:

YEAR: 1988
MAKE: PORSCHE
MODEL: 928 S4
VIN: WP0JB092XJS861047
ODOMETER SHOWS: 113478
DESCRIPTION: 5 SPEED MANUAL, SUNROOF, POWER LOCKS, MIRRORS & WINDOWS, CRUISE CONTROL, TILT STEERING, FACTORY TAPE PLAYER, DRIVES IN LOT, MECH CHECKED AND ADDED NEW BATTERY, NEW AIR FILTER, ENGINE OIL AND ANTIFREEZE TOPPED OFF, COOLING SYSTEM WORKING GOOD, TWIN COOLING FANS CYCLE, ALL ELECTRICS WORK, CLUTCH AND 5 SPEED ARE GOOD, INTERIOR VERY GOOD, NEEDS NEW TIRES, NEEDS PLATES & TABS

The photo shows is in a snowy parking lot at the auction site. Best as I can tell, it looks ok. It is an on line charitable auction and I am not able to view it prior to auction closing Wednesday PM.

I can't find my December 07 Excellence copy to see high's and low's for this year.

Currently it's priced at $2277. There is a reserve.

Uhh... wasn't it you who did that...?

I gathered from your initial post that you weren't really interested in it but were passing the info on to others who might be...

If your intent was different I didn't get it...

Alan

Alan,

I may not have been clear on my intention, however, I did not provide any pertinent information regarding the location of the auction. If I had intended on passing on information about the find, bad form on my part as another Pelican may have been bidding on the car, I would have included the website.

It appears as though Danglerb is the host of the auction and he may have an interest in exposing the vehicle.

Regardless, if his intent was to provide me information, we have PM's for that don't we?

Thanks for your reply Alan.

I thought the same as Alan, that you were passing on it and offering it to anybody interested, so I spent 5 min of my time and searched on the VIN and posted a link.

Most charity auction cars aren't a basket of fruit, but I suspect it sells for at least $5k if not more than $10k, and magazine prices will have nothing to do with what it sells for or the value it has. Being a 5 spd sets the floor as high as it does.

Something that puts my watch out antenna up is that it doesn't appear at least to my eye to have S4 wheels (8" instead 7" in the rear).

Were you just looking for someone local to check out the car for you? You kind of need to say that clearly along with a LOT less information if you plan to keep it for yourself.

Free info from carfax and autocheck below.

BTW any ONE of the following bits of information combined the basic 928 S4 for sale would have easily located the specific car.

VIN
exact mileage
exact description

Beyond that there are never more than about 60 to 100 928's for sale in the USA, and there are a number of people that know about them all, all the time. Anybody seriously interested in a S4 5 spd in MN with a current $2k bid would have found it in maybe an hour of calling around without any other information except that it was for sale.

If you do want to try and keep it for yourself, say so, edit your first post down to the bone, and I will just delete mine, but I seriously see no way to provide enough information that someone local might take the time to check the post, PM you, and check the car, without putting all the bargain hunters into search mode.

something like.

Requesting local check out of 928 near central MN ASAP

Ask for a PM and say nothing about the details publicly, not even that its for sale or a S4.

Since Dangler and the rest of you 928 scoundrels , already blew cover on this find . I thought I would add this picture from the auction site. To say it was in "a snowy parking lot" is the understatement of the year! (at least to us Florida folks)

So is anybody going to look it over?

Anybody run the carfax and autocheck?

Anybody else think the wheels don't look like S4 in the rear?

It could have had the wheels rotated like I have seen so many times. Or the rear spacers could have been removed. Who knows.

The terms of the auction are crazy. They stick it to you with about 7 different types of fees, the car must be picked up the day after the auction ends. If it isn't, you must pay additional money, up front, per day, for storage. It sounds like alot of hassle.

Still should be worth $3k or $4k as a parts car, maybe not?

Could be a real can of worms of junk parts I guess.

The last record reported to CARFAX is from November 2002. While there haven't been any DMV-reported problems, check with the seller to see if they have any service and repair records before you buy.

Apparently I have egg on my face and it's time to eat crow. Danglerb, please send a truck load of ketchup to Champlin, MN. Don't bother to take the feathers off the crow. Back the 928 over the crow to season it, I will eat it off the road.

Lesson learned.

Kirk
