How jobs grow ....
In search of the source of oil leaking at the top of the motor I decided to pull the oil filler breather filter thing today. Didn't look too hard, but after removing the bolts (which were NOT tight) and pulling the hoses (which seemed welded on) there just wasn't enough clearance between the coolant crossover and the throttle body.
I "think" I might have been "ok" if I stopped at this moment, awkwardly replaced the seal at the base of the breather, but I had the urge to clean the valley, so the scope was expanded. The first of the intake couplers tore when I was trying to work it lose, so I figured they were all toast and cut them off, and before too long everything in the middle was off. What a sight, half an inch of misc guck, and a big stack of parts for the washer. Half of one of my plug caps had been gnawed away by a rat, and all the wires looked cracked so I will be picking up a set of econo wires from JimB along with some other stuff in the morning. Old hard vacuum lines were cracking like pretzels, so looks like all that is going too. Weird thing is that I really really wasn't planning on keeping this motor, but I haven't decided on what I want to do for my next one, so maybe fixing this right isn't a bad thing. Seems educational anyway. Picts tomorrow if my senior brain cells kick in. |
