Speedomter and Fuel Guage
Does anyone know what part would actually be failing when either of these two guages starts acting up. when i say acting up i mean sometimes they will not register anything unless i tap on the plastic over them. im wondering if its just corrosion or if it means the guages are failing. any ideas
thank you

There's a fair chance that you have a wiring problem with the instrument cluster. The flexible circuit back there is terrible and it is easy for corrosion or broken contacts or tracks to cause problems.
I rewired mine and fixed the speedometer and oil pressure gauges. If you take the cluster out, you also may as well replace the odometer gear that, if original, is almost certainly at or near failure

i kind of figured it was something along those lines. my 88 944 turbo never had dash problems, but my friends 86 944 turbo and my current 86 928 have guages that seem to dance around a little or not work unless provoked. the good news is the steering wheel on my 86 doesnt have an airbag so its a little easier to work with
thanks for your response
