Tell me why this is a bad idea.
 

OK, so I've been toying with getting a 928, yet I have no money after feeding my 911 and Boxster. Along comes an 82, ex- Arizona car, all the bills back to day one, but it has sat in the sun, and the interior is destroyed. The dash and headliner are completely riuned, and the rest of the interior is poor. Here's the thing- It's only $1,995. I have a line on an interior for approx $1500. At only 2k for the car, even if it blows up, what have I got to lose? I could drive a beater 928 for the summer, and see if it's the way I want to go. Opinions?

Nothing is more expensive than a cheap Porsche.

Is it a runner ?

I'm going to drive it tomorrow. I'm a sucker for impulse buys, but common sense might prevail.

Consider the whole car, bid low and hope for the best, maybe they won't accept.

I wouldn't...if you're like me then you find yourself spending lots of time and $ on the new toy. I think you should sell the 911 and Boxster and buy a newer 928!

Wouldn't touch it..In fact the words "Run Forrest, Run!" come to mind.

If it sat long enough for the sun to trash the interior, it sat long enough for all your hoses to be bad, seals, etc.. 928's hate sitting still.

The hole in many "fix it cheap" plans is that most owners that let a car go to junk in one area, do so in all others. Here is a short check list.

Clear title?
No accidents?
Original paint is a saveable state?
Interior in a saveable state?
Mileage?
How long since it was driven regularly?
Any mechanical issues?
What are the $$$ if it was parted (often a good reality check).

Well, common sense prevailed. Mechanically it wasn't bad, and the paint was acceptable, but even after a whole lot of interior work, it looked like all the electrical bits, heater, wipers, etc would be a problem. Essentially it would take some work to bring it up to "beater" status. However, it wasn't a waste as I had a chance to drive a 928. I think a 5 speed is more my taste, but maybe a clean auto would be ok. I wouldn't base my opinion of 928s on this car.

If I was living in Canada and thinking about a 928, I would be jumping on a Japanese import. More money, like $15k, but that would get you a really nice low mileage car.

The advice I give is: Find one with a really straight body, good paint and even better interior. The mechanical stuff on the old cars is easier/cheaper to sort out...

Lets just say the Yakuza know how to make the miles roll back. ;)

Rollbacks are always a risk, and no model year is safe, but I'm not sure I would point a finger at Japanese imports in particular. Careful inspection and records are your friend in buying a 928.

Aw c'mon guys!! As one who is trying to restore an old 928 back from death, every so often we need some encouragement!!

If everybody came to their senses on this board there would only be 1 or 2 posts a month :D

My wife and daughter were in it at the time. Daughters ok, wife is pretty sore. It was a raised 4x4, damn near did go over them. I figure the roll bars would have stopped him though.

Maybe. My 928 110 651 00 is cracked. Its an 8" small molded hose, 13mm ID on one end and 8mm ID on the other. Used to be $8, part is now superceded to poorer fitting similar hose, $76.
