Phone dial wheels

I have a '78 928 that has the original phone dials. Are these wheels the same width & off set front & rear & what is the rim width. There are 245/45-16 tires front & rear, is this okay? Once again, thank you all.

I just checked my 78 Phone Dials and confirmed that they are 7" wide, but there's no offset (ET) number stamped inside of them. Front and rear have the same offset though.

The stock tire size is 225/50, but 245/45 has close to the same circumference and is usually considered to be safe on a 7" wide wheel.

16" is 7" wide Offset is et65mm
245 on a 7" is tight. 15" would be fine, 16" tough, 17" not happening.

A 245 on a 16" would like a 8-9.5" rim. Also the 45 series profile will be almost a half inch (0.4) shorter.

If you can stick with teh 225/50r16 that's the way to go with stock phone dials, unless you like the stretched look.

Pretty sure there are more than one size of the phone dials too, as the 944 used the same design in several models.

Some 928's and most 944s came with 15" phone dials

Early 928 wheels are 65 mm offset on all 4 wheels. The too wide tire will not handle/ corner as well as a 225. Most Racing rules limit the rim size rather than try to measure tire size. The width number 245 mm is the widest point at the bulge of the sidewalls and is NOT tread width. Run too wide a tire and bad things happen when trying to turn corners. When the tire bead is pinched in at the rim cornering forces will push the rim sideways and it starts to lift the inside part of the tread off the road . A narrower tire has more of a V shape or more parrallel sidewalls so much less defelection of the rim in a turn far better handling. Racers who mount tireswhich are too wide just have higher lap times.

There you go, this is the expert advice. Sounds like sticking to the 50's on these rims is the best choice.
