How to remove the engine cooling fan
 

Hey guys,

I want to asses the engine health of my project 928 with a leak down test but need to be able to access the crankshaft bolt.

In order to do so it seems the best way would be to remove the cooling fan from the front of the motor.

It looks like I need to hold the fan shaft while loosening the 19mm ( I believe) fan nut.
I was unable to get a wrench in between the pulley and shaft bracket and was wondering if I will need a special tool to hold the shaft?

Is this even the correct process to removing the fan? Is the fan nut reversed thread or regular?

There is a bracket that holds the fan which bolts to the engine. There are 3 bolts and the whole assembly comes off, remove or loosen the fan belt first. I believe the bolts are 10mm.

I've never taken off the fan to rotate the crank, just use a LONG socket on a BIG ratchet. With all the plugs out, tranny in neutral, its not all that hard to turn the motor.

13mm socket for the fan hub bracket bolts--three of them.



27mm deep socket and a 1/2 drive breaker bar or torque wrench will do it.


Fan removal really isn't necessary.....just rotate the breaker bar slowly and don't get your arms in a bind with the fan blades.

I figured if it was an easy removal it would make rotating the crank a bit easier.
