Top goes
The big ugly thing on the top. It is easier to remove anyway. Take her off and see if you like the look better. After all it is YOUR car.
Dryer vents gone...Oh man, now I am going to have to come up with a nickname other than "Maytag man" You sure you don't want to put em back?

The codes are on the approx 4" square white decal found under the trunk carpet on the right hand side on the steel floor. there will be a list of 3 digit numbers and other things, maybe you'll be lucky and she'll have a code 220 (LSD) but list all of them and we'll decode them and we'll see what this car was when unaltered.

What does YZ mean in the paint code for 1985

I've searched around and I couldn't find anything about that YZ code. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about these things can chime in.
Here's the weird thing, and let me start by saying, I'm no expert w/ these VIN numbers and I could be wrong, but I think you may have a 1986 model year. Also it could be the more favorable late 1986 model, referred to as 1986.5 The reason I say this is looking at the last 6-digits in your VIN (chassis no.) that you posted earlier it says ...862002. The last four digits is the serial (2,002) and it has been said that if the last four digits of an '86 model is 1,000 or higher it is considered a '86.5. Which means it will have some of the upgrades of the '87 S4 model but with the earlier body type. Easily checked, it will have the 4 piston Brembo brakes of the S4 and dual exhausts underneath, among other things. But you can do a search on that it was discussed here a couple of months ago. The reason I think it could be a 1986 model is from 862002 the first two digits in that sequence. Even though it's build date says Nov. or Dec. 1985 it was meant to be for the '86 model year. Finally, using that first link I posted previously, it's for a program that can decode VIN numbers. Can't verify the accuracy of that program, but when you put in your VIN number it will tell you that yours is a "rest of the world" (ROW) model. Not meant for the USA, I wonder if it was for the Japanese market? Thus the rear wheel flares, that were common in those cars, as well as front wheel flares which yours doesn't seem to have (could have been removed). Or someone could have just added all that after market body work stuff which is the more feasible explanation. I think it's the latter and it's a US car as well. Like I said hopefully someone more knowledgeable about these things will tell you what your build code says. And keep in mind some of these build/option codes from this era don't list everything that you may have. Like mine only says CO2 and nothing else. No mention of the driver's heated seat that mine has, unless that was standard equipment during that time or a dealer add on. PS- Someone might say to get a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche, was about $100 years ago not sure about the price now, but from what I read sometimes they make mistakes and is not 100% accurate especially for these 80's or earlier p-cars. Just letting you know if you really want to find out & try. |

The "86"2002 does not mean 1986. The 6 is the Submodel or Engine code. Euro S models have a "4" in this spot. The 8 is the end of 928 model number, which is split up. The year designation is a letter, starting with the letter A for 1980.
a=1980 b=1981 c=1982 d=1983 e=1984 f=1985 g=1986 His Vin has an "F" so it's a 1985 Here's the VIN layout: wp0=Porsche, jb0=US market, 92= beginning of model 928, 5 is a filler, F= year, S=Stutgart Factory, 8=end of model 928, 6=engine designation (32v 5.0L), 2002= sequential production number
