You are correct .... about being wrong. ;)

On a car with a working lambda control system that uses the o2 sensor to correct the mix, the AF is constantly wiggling near the magic o2 point.

Your car is going to go solid rich or lean and stay there, so I suspect the meter reading will be useless, hope you didn't buy it yet. ;)

What the "narrow" part of narrow band means is that the output signal switches from rich to lean over a narrow range of o2, way too narrow for any kind of fuel management to control within, which is the basis of lambda control, its oops too rich turn down the fuel, oops too lean give more fuel constantly correcting. Only more modern system using wide band actually try to hold some set value.

Ok, with this said. I am wrong (a lot ;)), but how would it work on say my Mitsubishi Eclipse if I were to splice into my O2 Sensor Signal Wire to that same gauge? Would it still go all lean or all rich?

Same thing, if you want useful information for tuning, you need a wideband. As for LED numbers AutoMeter makes a round gauge for use with wideband O2's, so you don't have to go with a digital readout.

Weird. I actually emailed those guys that sell that gauge and I specifically said it was a "Narrow Band" O2. they said this will work.

It may work, but you won't get any truly useful information from it is the point. They want you to buy one, so damn straight it will work!

Ok all, great news! Got my Euro to pass yesterday (Friday). I went straight to the DMV to get her registered and finally have 2010 Tags! Last tags on this car was 2000. Couldn't get anymore stressful than this. All that hard work to think that I may never see it legally on the road again was very frustrating. All is good now. Here is a pic of my readings. Very Very Lean. Time to Fatten (Richen) her up! Repair cost's were to adjust timing from 10 to 23.

Great news, Leo! It's got to be great to see all that hard work pay off and finally be able to drive it on the road legally. I know I was sweating it when I first bought mine and was greatly relieved when it passed with no problems.

Kinda sucks that they charged you $45 to adjust your timing, but it probably feels like money well spent.

Did you go to the referee station? I've never seen a smog thing with repairs on it.

Did the system recognize your car as a Euro?

Did they check the new cat, read the number?

Timing 10 -> 23, that must have changed how it runs?

If you "richen" it up, that new cat won't last two years.

No Ref., I avoided them like the plague. Not sure on the Euro part, but I am thinking he smoged it as a US. He did check the Cat and read the numbers with a mirror. Yup, timing is making it die when cold, but when I have time, I am going to try and do the A/F adjustments, but documenting all movements. I disagree on the richening it up. It is now not at it's optimum setting. It is too lean as it is right now. Look at the Co. My HC got cleared up with a new Cat as Glen has stated. Hosting a Easter Party right now, so can't mess with it at the moment.
