Custom 928 Cold Air Intake

anyone have any ideas or plans or whatever for a custom 928 Cold air intake? i was thinking of doing one and a question i had was is it safe or possible to put a cone filter in the area of where the headlights are inside the wheel well?

or has someone already made one out of metal because thats what iam really going for....to throw away my duct tapeed intake tubes and replace them with some nice painted metal ones...

The 928 has a high pressure zone at the base of the windshield, so what some have done is remove the AC and cabin air blower fan and cut the firewall to vent directly into the filter.

The Blackbird intake system is pretty nice too.

Many have installed intake cone filers into the fender area under the headlight. This is probably best for forced induction since there is not a huge direct airflow there unless you open things up.

I would avoid metal as much as possible for the intake to keep the air cool - you may want a metal section welded for the through hole in the fender wall though. You will need to do some reconfiguring to create room for the fender pass throughs on both sides - no covenient place stock. There is plenty of room in the fenders - though you may need to move the horns on the pass side (easy).

Don't forget that an all metal intake is a problem - the engine moves on the mounts - the fenderwalls/radiator etc do not... you need a suitable length flex section at least.

should i think of routing to a different area if iam not going to boost the car?

You should think about leaving it alone. ;)

Focus on making your 928 run correctly, then worry about how to improve it.

Porken has some good idea's, generally what you want is the coolest highest pressure air you can get.

true, but it runs fine... i fixed the weird running and all of that. now iam in the process of dreaming about getting the headers off to fix the exhaust manifold gasket leak. THOSE THINGS ARE PACKED IN THERE!!!!!!!! its taken me ALL DAY!!! from about 9:46am to 10:20pm to get the headers separated from the exhaust and undo 4 bolts on the passenger header..... its a true pain in the ass!!

I really don't know about high and low pressure zones on the 928 but here's what I have done. About even with the hood emblem and eqadistant from the hood edges, I put in two 1965 ferrari hood scoups, They are the reverse kind, instead of up they are down. When they were finally hammed out they were a little more rounded towards the apex than they apperar in the picture. They allow more air as speed goes up to the front of the upper radiator area where the original intakes are. All I can say on this matter is that I get better throttle response at speed. I does add in my opinion to the already aggressive looks. Accurate messurements in this modification are critical. The scoupes have to be before the radiator division under the hood and can not be too deep or the will interfer will the top of the radiator. measure, lineup, check twice and find a compitent body man to pound the scoupeshttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1321001227.jpg This is paintshop image I designed and took to my body man. The picture is cool but the end product is functional and looks even cooler and with new paint will be better yet, By the way the car in the picture isn't mine, I just used a good shot for the workup or the scoupes. Mine's the same year and color.

i am planning on using 2 electric ducted fan engines from a raido controlled jet .... should give me a nice boost ...... i like th ferrari scoops ... they would help w my plan

Your euro is CIS so any forced air system upsteam of the air sensor plate will cause an over rich condition at the lower rpms. Cold air systems are fine, but stay away from any pressurized air system.

tisilrad 11-11-2011 06:24 AM

I was planning on fabricating a cold air intake using the y pipe you find online(ebay) for the corvettes, two 90 degree couplings and two inline filters of some type (inclosed filters like 3" HEAT SHIELD AIR FLOW SHORT RAM INTAKE CONE AIR FILTER CARBON FIBER LOOK BLACK | eBay or similar. The pipe would come off the end of the filters to my stock intake locations above the radiator.

Plexus928 11-11-2011 11:49 AM

I would have thought that a 928,stock, has more than enough air inlet, wouldn't it be better to vent the rear of the hood to get the hot air out?

924CarreraGTP 11-18-2011 02:21 AM

Why not put NACA ducts on the rear of the hood above the air filter housing holes on each side. Then vent it from the hood ducts to the airbox. Also, the 928 already has air outlet at the back of the hood. Look at how the rear of the hood and the windshield wiper plate are mated. You could also do similar ducts a little more forward and duct them into twin fans that blow into each side of the airbox. So fresh cool air ram inducted to fans that blow into each side of the airbox. GTRacing has NACA ducts.

Pete R 11-18-2011 06:06 AM

The stock system already is basically a cold air intake. The radiator seals on the hood. All the air drawn in is from the from in front of the radiator and out of the engine compartment.

I want that hood!

neil30076 11-18-2011 01:29 PM

Andy, there is a red S4 down here in SD with those scoops - and V8 badges on the side, and .....
- thumbs down, looked terrible when i saw it.

Danglerb 11-18-2011 03:41 PM

I like the lines of the 928, messing with any of it usually doesn't look good.

Don't like raising the hood in the rear.
Don't like scoop or vents on the hood, plenty of air goes out along the side and out the bottom.

Do like extending air intakes forward past the AC coil.
Do like sealing the AC coil and radiator top and maybe sides too.

Most of the cold air benefit I think gets lost in the hot U tube and intake system. Replacing or thermal coating inside and out sounds good to me.

OTOH you might be amazed at how fast the charge air temp drops at WOT. My wife's Lincoln is OBDII so I can use a scanner to watch the charge air temp, and first time I did I thought the sensor was bad, showing like 135F, but WOT it dropped within a second or so to ambient.
