Preformance

i have an 1979 928,
i was wondering is there anything i could do to get more power or more performance out of my car.
with out spending an arm and a leg.

thanks tony

Ditch the cat, and get a high flow exhaust with a Y pipe. Possibly advance the timing.

Plugs, cap, rotor, wires and new air filter. If it's auto trans. shift point adjustments can be made. Agree w/ Daniel D exhaust will help, I thought car got a little loud for my taste. But definitely helped perfomance.
Happy hunting,
John

Your going to be spending an arm and leg anyway, older models are only slightly cheaper to maintain than newer more expensive to buy models. You might as well spend the other arm and leg and get all the power you want.

I went a little nuts the first year I owned my 83. It seemed to run ok, but just didn't have the sort of power I wanted. I fussed over what kind of changes to make, looked at engine swaps, or just getting a different car entirely. A nasty oil leak forced me to pull the intake and I decided to replace all the vacuum and breather lines, do new plug wires etc etc. It runs great now, nothing like it used it with lots of smooth power. Not as much as my Euro or an S4, but enough I stopped thinking about changing anything on it.

Lesson is, the 928 has a big powerful V8, that can feel like it is running fine even when the power is maybe 75% of normal.

First make your car run 100%, then think about options like exhausts or swapping in a Euro or Euro hybrid motor, early ones are CIS, so its an easy swap.

Don't mean to highjack this post, but my jump in is very relevant to this post for sure. I have a 1979 928 that someone has completely hacked/changed the entire exhaust run from the headers back. There is some sort of CUSTOM YPipe action, no cat, and 3 inch pipe all the way back to a very high flow spin tech muffler, and then about 24-30 inches of 3 inch pipe out of the muffler to the single dump behind the rear wheel. Now, my question for the pros is does this sound like a good idea for this type of setup? Is the 3 inch with single muffler no cat bettering the flow or creating issues? Seems to run good/strong but again this entire run is super custom/non std and for sure not anywhere near stock. Is 3 inch all the way through okay here??? I am willing to dive in and change it if this is wrong, but just want some opinions on what is there right now. Will be happy to post a bunch of underneath pics as I do have them, just do not have any with me right now to post. Will post tonight if need be. Feel free to reply with any and all feedback you have from the above info given so far...

3 inch is fine, you really should run some kind of a cat, decent modern OBDII cats won't suck up more than 5 hp tops, likely less, and significantly reduces the emissions, slightly reduces loudness. The rest is personal preference on how loud etc you like it.

MPDano 06-24-2009 12:58 PM

Why would you run a Cat if you weren't required to? I know if I didn't "have" to in California, there would be a "Y" Pipe in my near future.

SharkTech 06-24-2009 01:02 PM

Don't feel CAT is needed. I am in PA, and registered CLASSIC, exempt from emissions. Whoo hoo!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

just more curious about the 3 inch, etc and all the extra 3 inch behind the muffler.

Danglerb 06-24-2009 02:39 PM

So you two and your kids etc don't breath air?

Running without a cat is just being negligent, like littering.

I knew this was the stance you were going to. That could be a great topic over on the Bannlist. I wonder how all those "X" and "Y" Pipers would respond to you? I think you should pose that question ;)

I ALSO figured that is where he was going with that comment. My defense is like this, I have a 928 for pure performance/power/enthusiastic driving, and just that. I use it maybe a whole whopping 12-1800 miles a year, if that. Is is NOT my everyday driver, registered CLASSIC, and if it was I would sure have it as eco-friendly as possible, like my Land Rover which IS my daily driver. I do understand/respect your comment there, but my 928 is about what I can get out of it for the smiles, not the environment, if ya know what I mean. It is not right, but it is sure damn fun... ;)

Now, also, as promised, I will post a few pics of the underneath custom run. Take a look, do you guys think I am okay with whatever was done custom to create this setup? Sounds insane, seems to have decent power all around but just wanted a few opinions on the setup that you can now actually look at it, and since it is way far from stock. Again, alot of extra 3 inch pipe out of the muffler, does this create any back pressure issues, etc? Just curious as I always respect your guys opinions. Thx for taking a peek, tell me what ya think.

My opinion doesn't change no matter where I post. 30 years ago smog equipment was the enemy of performance, now cats have almost no negative effects.

It does needless harm.

It could lead to more states adopting Calif smog requirements.

Okay Dan,
If I promise to research adding a high flow 3 inch CAT will you give me an honest opinion on what you feel about this 3 inch setup with all the extra outta the muffler, etc?!?!?! ;)

Danglerb 06-25-2009 11:30 AM

That Y merge should come forward a foot or so, and generally I like the sound of a muffler at the end of the tail pipe. Long tail pipes after the muffler remind me too much of a tractor. The single 3" pipe to the rear is plenty big for your motor.

BTW I am not trying to tell you what to do, just what you should do. ;)
