Painting a 928
 

I was wondering if someone could give me some paint stripping/prep tips for my 928. Unfortunately, it was the victim of a very poor repaint at the hands of a former owner. I wasn't sure of the roof, and door material, ( I asumed it to be aluminum like the fenders). I planned on doing either a chem strip,or a glass beading. any suggestions?

The biggest hurdle is getting all the crap paint off. Porsche's OE Glasurit primer is very durable. You can try chemically stripping, but very nasty, caustic, messy; I wouldn't attempt it.

Best thing is to get you an air compressor & a DA sander & some 180/220/320 sand paper for the DA & go to town stripping off all the crap paint. You *should* see the current paint come off, then the primer, then the original paint, then the original primer: start in one are over a soft bend & sand back & forth & see what you get. If your car was not fully stripped at it's prior paint job (more than likely not if it's failing so fast), then you should be able to take the sanding down into the original paint & be safe at that. If you sand down too far & see bare steel/aluminum, you'll want to acid-etch primer those areas before painting.

You can paint over scuffed paint or primer original to the 928: it was applied correctly. If your car has had minor/major work, usually it's confined to certain areas (brown fender orginally, painted white, for example). I did my euro 928 about 7 years ago: fun, tedious.

Here are some pics of exactly that process, and what you are gonna see as you strip through all the old coats/primer, etc. Very time consuming, but the only way to fly while painting your 928, for sure.

I also did the rear S spoiler delete and added the S4 window trim, etc to setup for the S4/GT rear wing. Pics do nothing for it, should see it with ur own 2 eyes, just perfect...

Yes, great job.

Well, there is the catch. My Dad-In-Law owns a prestigious Auto Body shop that only does super high end work, a lot of classic resto, etc... He claims between the body work and material this would have run the average Joe about $6K, including the C2 Turbo wheels done black along with the center caps, etc.

And my wife thinks SHE is the reason I married her... ;););)

Needless to say, I haven't the facility,or the temarity to effect a paint job like that. Your car looks great, Good job! I plan on painting my '80 in swartz metallic, (charcoal grey).

Sounds nice, love that gray color. I threw around a few ideas as far as paint schemes, etc. This was an original guards red car, so I figured between that and loving the new indischrot red on the 997 TT's, it was a must. The final product is nothing short of amazing...

My 81 is schwartz metallic (black metallic). At first I didn't really care for the color but it has really grown on me. I don't know if you could call it a rare color, but I think I've only seen one other in the same color.
I'm in the process of repainting it right now with the help and guidance of sonett3. Here is one of the major reasons I'm repainting mine.

the irony of it all

My '79 was a dark charcoal color. I thought for sure the color was shwartz metallic.
My Bad. Did porsche do a charcoal grey metallic? What is the proper germanic name?

So I here the process for painting the front clip (the plastic nose cone) is different than the metal body. Is that true? If so, what specifically do I need to to consider? The paint is chipping pretty badly, and missing all-together in a couple of spots. I'm tempted to take a plastic paint scrapper and get it down to the bare black plastic. But that means I will need to paint the whole thing (which needs to be done anyways) soon.
