Help! Lost 1st 3rd and 5th gears...
Hi All
Something strange just happened while I was driving. I tried to shift to 3rd gear quickly then usual so I might used more force then I usually do. Anyway, I felt like something moved in the shift rod area and then I noticed that I can not put the rod lever to the 3rd gear! I set it into 3rd and the feeling is that the lever cant reach the gear completely since it bounces off to neutral gear. :confused: This is also happening in 1st and 5th gear...:( reverse, 2nd and 4th are a little closer to the center then they used to be.. but they work just fine. What did I do?????!?!?? :confused: I assume that it can be adjusted...how can I adjust it back? |
jack up the car and re center the rear shift connection you will need 2 13mm wrenches to loosen the bolt.
Make sure the trans is in neutral before you final tighten the collar. The shifter should be just centered in the shifter housing you will need a helper to hold it there while you tighten the collar |

Well, it is much worse then I though :mad:
It seems that the reason why I lost the 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears are because of a broken guide rod!!!! As can be seen in the attached picture, it broke exactly in the welding to the metal plate (red arrow). ****! When I came to my friend, the welding was already broken on the top and in the bottom it still held but then it completely broke :( On Sunday (here it is a working day) he will try to weld it together without taking of the entire shift linkage since it is a huge work. It seems that the pressure on the welding is on the top part so if he will weld it on the sides and on the top - without the bottom part, that can not be reached, it should hold. I would not say common but your not the first one to have this problem and this is the reason that someone has MFGd a new shifter mechanisim to get rid of the old unit

Just weld it and be done with it. Mark Kibort on Rennlist had the same problem in his race car. He welded it in place and it held fine.

Fabio there is a new shifter assembly that removes the front control rod all together, this makes shifting more precise Roger sells them

This dude is in Israel. The shipping and duty will be astronomical IMHO. If I were him I would weld it and go on with life. In fact, if mine broke here in the states I would probably repair it.
What is this replacement you are speaking of? Do you have pics or an explanation of what is changed? I would like to hear about it. |
the new part is actually mounted into the shifter housing and then the shifter is then connected via Heim joints to the rear rod.

Fabio421 is right. I will weld it and hope it will hold...for now it seems like the best solution.
