84 Euro refresh begins!

A couple of pictures of the $1,100 84 Euro S I picked up here in San Diego. Interior needs work, I have rear quarter panels and console on the way here already. Runs very strongly, complete refresh under the hood starts soon, plus full 'Wally' electrical workover, etc, etc. Paint job is also planned.
Goal is to finish by early April!

Cool Getten' Ready to Get Ready -

Congratulations - It looks like you have bought yourself a great car to start off your restoration project, We have all seen and heard of much worse. With the engine and transmission operational and the majority of the interior usable - you are way ahead of the expense curve.

Good Luck - Michael

Anything special in mind for the refresh?

Are you pulling heads?

I got a goofy idea into my head, and may do my next Euro motor with US distributors on the cam gears. I also would really like to update the injectors to non hose types.

All vacuum lines, the injector hoses and a couple of injectors were all just replaced by PO ( a BMW shop owner that lost interest !) who also replaced radiator hoses, belt on the dual dizzy's, gas tank ( it had a leak) ,MAF ( it failed emission due to lean). I'll be checking the belt, wp, tensioner, etc.
Odometer has only 57700 on it, and its not broken, so not sure what the real mileage is . Has CA BAR plate on door.

looks like it has new cat, no O2 sensor -

Neil, you can have an O2 Bung welded on there "Pre-Cat." Then you can run your Innovate set up. I love the twin Distributors!

Nice project, a new set of carpets in another color as well as the interior , but first a paint job, interior iis last.
There wont be any place to connect the O2 sensor as the early LH system doesnt support it, but for the looks use an old O2 sensor and rout the wires up through the normal hole in the chassis

Mike, they bought the MAf but it looks like they never installed it, I have it in a box, and it looks line it is marked 928intl - part number is Bosch 0.230.214.001 - haven't checked to see if it is the right one for this car yet.
Leo, both the pipes coming in just off the left side of the picture have bungs already, so i'm ahead on this one!.
Stan, agree with order, not sure about the O2 sensor - the attached smog report marked the sensor as N/A not sure what that means.

Last test was in Oct 2008, Failed - high HC and NO, which is why they concluded needed a new MAF - what do you guys think? Plan is to ship car out of state to South Carolina anyway when it sdone, so may be able to get by here in CA on 2 month temp tag while i fix it, then ship and avoid smog all toghether :-)

I'm gonna go with that the O2 Sensor was not required for this year of yours. For example, an EGR Valve was not required on my year either, but a 79 does require an EGR. Either way, mount your Wideband O2 Sensor in one of those bungs and set it up so you can see what your A/F is and then you can troubleshoot a whole lot easier. Plus if you get some bonehead Smog Guy and he starts looking for an O2, there will be no questions about it.

IMHO, the paint doesn't even look that bad. I would do the interior first then paint. I vote to keep that same interior color, looks cool with a Blue Interior and Grey Exterior. Nice Combo.

Could be they put the old maf back in the new box, pretty common practice.

BTW I still buy old MAF cores if you aren't keeping yours send me a PM.

My last smog on my 85 NOX was like 897, and I am hoping a new MAF fixes that.

Best results painting without the interior, so I would pull the interior, paint, and not put the interior back until all the paint work was done.

I'm with Leo on this one - I had both my 914 and an MG Midget painted with full interiors in place and both were without a roof, and no overspray or any other problems. The clearcoat is shot on the roof and hood, so it only looks good from a 100 feet!

Its not a masking issue, its a what do you prep and paint issue. When my Porsche was painted I made them pull the rubber and sand etc to the edge of the metal , and you can't really do that with the interior panels in place.

I wouldn't bother with a tape on the rubber paint job.

Sure you can. Just remove the kick plate and rubber edging around the door opening, this gets you to the edges. If you also want to paint the door to the edges, just remove the trims and door panel, then tape what you don't want painted, glass, etc.

It really boils down to what your going to paint. If Neil paints the same color and the inside door edging is fine, then it should be very easy. I guess if you really want a Concourse Kermit, then yes remove every friggin screw bolt till you just have body and frame, then paint. As far as I remember, this is going to his daughters and if Neil went Concourse, then the keys would never reach his daughters hands. It would then become Neils 2nd 928

Any guesses what this hack is for ?
The smaller tube is grafted into the main tube, I haven't tried to trace it out yet.

That would be air injected when the A/C is kicked in. I would be interested where that little tubes leads to. Air to ??

Yup, I know its the air injection for a/c - just never seen the 'graft ' before - when i pull the wheel on that side i'll trace it - it goes through the wall into the wheel well.
