Turbo'ing 928
The pics here are of a TT928. The other turbo is under the car but the position of this turbo got me to thinking. Has anyone used a largeish single turbo in this location?

That location puts alot of heat into the timing belt and causes it to stretch. There was a local car here in FL that had twins in that area. He took it off within a couple thousand miles.

i declined placing a single turbo in this location due to the heat issues on all the surrounding components.

Finally nice riding here
I had my 928S out for some good rides since last November. The timing belt and pump job is holding up. I have put maybe 450 miles on the car. It hit 62 here today so nice riding around the back roads. I calculated on the expressway I am getting about 19 or 20 mpg. Not bad averaging around 70 mph. The car is running better than when I first got it. No more "rich" smell on cold starting. I have put in some Lucas injector cleaner on every tank so far and that may be enough for awhile. The car is spotless clean in my garage.

I think the sheer volume of air passing over the area keeps it reasonably "cool" remember when the turbo heats up you are gathering speed, rapidly. I guess you could fit a large single there, I just would never consider fitting a single turbo! Everyone who has ridden in this car has commented on the boost delivery, boost starts at around 1800 rpm and is on the wastegate by around 2500, so it has mighty mid range torque, and that is really useable power. 'Tis a top job Roy. I just thought of the single turbo as in it would keep costs down. A decent heat shield could be fabbed to alleviate any heat around the timing covers. The V8 has plenty of low down torque so a largeish single would work ok. I'm certain 8 into one would spin up the snail pretty well. After owning a 930 I kinda like that smack in the face power delivery.

Yes it certainly could be done, and with a modern ball bearing turbo it would probably spin up quite early anyway. And then you would get a second kick as the 4.7 litre cams come to life.
I guess you should be able to get away with an easy 5-7 psi that should add 120-150 hp to your bottom line! The other turbo 928 that was at the Porsche day had been dynoed at 5psi and 352 RWKW -approaching 500hp! those 32 valve heads must flow well! Cheers Roy |
