Gents,
My 82 has a problem in the sunroof. The passenger side does not want to move, so the sunroof will not open. The drivers side wants to go back but with the other side not wanting to move much it only opens about 1" and then binds up. I have looked at the motor and it works fine and so does the gearbox. I have installed others just to make sure and it does the same thing. My question is how do I manually roll back the sunroof so I can take it out and inspect the rails, cables ect. I have looked all over the web trying to find a way and even went through the factory service manuals but to no avail. Anyone know the secret? Is there a catch some where that I can release to open it up? Thanks in advance for the help. Ramon |

i beleive you need top pull the headliner to view all the coponents. on the transmission to the sunroof, connected to the motor yo will ee a screw. remove the screw and there is a hex nut. take a socket and star spinning it. my prob is i couldnt remove the screw. that it a problem.
To get to that screw just remove that header peice above your head

to open the roof,
first remove the motor cover at the back of the roof, then remove the motor gearbox ( the gearbox is held in place with 2 8mm nuts and slides off the motor drive) you may be having the push the cables to the open position, after the gear is taken out of the way. Once you get the roof open about 6 inches then loosen the 3 screws along the front edge of the sunroof, this will release the interior liner pull it down and slide it forwards, there are 3 felt pads along the bottom rear edge of the liner so be careful when sliding this forwards a little push upwards should free them to move forwards, once you have the liner out then you will see the mechanism that runs the roof. y ou may have a broken transition tab . or the transition block has come off , use loctite on all of the securing screws and dont over tighten the 4 bolts on the front bar, a few of them may only be finger tight the loctite will hold them in place once they are set. Tape a piece of clear plastic onto the outside of the roof ( the kind of plastic you might find at the doctors office on their magazine covers)so it doesnt get scratched when you open the roof to work on it. Reference the WSM for complete instructions on adjusting the roof

Sunroof Drive Cable -
Hey spooledx2, I had a similar problem with my sunroof. There is a black plastic coupler at each end of the left and right drive cables that is usually the issue. One plastic coupler will break while the other side continues to try and pull the sunroof open. Sometimes as the sunroof becomes wedged off center, the plastic coupler on the remaining good side will then also break. One of my drive cables had initially lost it’s pivot pin sticking out of the side of the plastic coupler while the other coupler had completely detached (broke off). Search this site for additional 928 sunroof information.
Good Luck, Michael

Awesome! thanks for the info gents I will give this a shot tomorrow. I quit when i figured out I couldn't figure out how o manually open it, because I didn't want to force it and create more problems... This gets me headed in the right direction.
Thanks again Ramon |
