ODO meter question
 

Hi Guys

My ODO meter was not working (both counters) due to a broken gear.
I bought this gear and put it in place and on the table, both counters worked perfectly.
When I put it all into the car and pressed on the reset button (that resets the trip meter) only the top counter continued working. the bottom counter (trip) is trying to work...I can see the digits trying to turn but they cant...any ideas why it can happen?
should I take all apart again? :(

I would say yes, it also sounds like it wasn't installed correctly or another gear (tooth) is broken since it's "trying" to work.

We were looking at one last night that was having some trouble operating without hanging up (main set of numbers). Looked like it needed a shim washer between the number counters. Saw a write-up by SeanR on this somewhere, either reutterwerks or rennlist. So I guess there are multiple things that can go wrong with the mechanicals.

You may also just have some debris from the bad gear binding other gears. When I replaced mine there where pieces of the degraded gear on other gears; I cleaned them at the same time. Also, clean out the middle of the thing/inducer on the cluster where the post slips in for the reset button.

Bummer though...having to go back in there.

While you are in there, another post has a guy looking for a picture of the ignition switch plug (with wires attached). When he was in there his plug separated from the wires. Post a pic if you can of this assembled plug!

Had one I did yesterday that I had to remove three times to get it right. The last time I took the speedo completely apart and found remnants of the old gear lodged on the back side of the motor that operates the gears. Couldn't see it unless I pull it all the way out of the cluster.

Was a first for me on that one.

Just make sure and get all the chunks out, even the tiny bits can get caught up and cause another failure. I use a can of compressed air to get in the smaller spaces.

I guess I do have some small piece of something stuck in those gears...at least the main mile counter works :\
