Interior Lights

My interior lights on my 85 928S US version, come on when switched, but they do not come on when the doors are opened. In addition the red safety lights on the doors are not working. Would this be the switch in the hinge area? Is there a way to test these?

to expand on Deans explanation,
The pin switches are grounds they complete the circuit so the lights are always powered.

The pin switches in the door jambs are removed with an 11mm wrench.
Turn the nut portion slowly then twist the black part back so you dont twist the wire and damage it.
Then clean the metal portion with an eraser then reinstall.

To fix the rear door lights disconnect the battery first,

then pry the light housing out of the door it will probably be rusty, hopefully you can reclean the ends.
Connect the battery and see if the lights work. Disconnect the battery.

Then wash the light housing /lens holder put it back together slide the rubber boot over the rear of the housing then add a dab of silicone sealant RTV to the harness where it comes out of the boot,
this will prevent water from fouling the rear of the light housing.

Install the light fixture with the holes facing to the floor so it wont fill up with water

actually on the passenger side, just by removing the switch and rescrewing it in, the lights started working.
On the drivers side when i removed the switch, it was not connected. I had to fish in the small hole with a coat hanget to find the wire.
when I did, I found a black wire attatched to the brown and white wire.
i disconnected the black wire and just hooked the brown and white to the switch and everything started working.
should there be a black wire?
I am wondering if someone ran that or is it factory?
