While out tinkering this am I cleaned all grounds on my seats and now they adjust up and down, well that was sweet! Then while taking parts off my donor 82 I had a aaaha moment with taking out the distributor, I went to "lucille" that's what I call my 84, and started tinkering with the distributor and turned counter and clockwise a few times listening to idle and watching idle , well anyways I think I found a sweet spot because it has a new steady idle,no hesitation in the gas peddle and responds Waaaay better! I think I'm going to have the 82 motor pulled and checked for valves and belts and everything but have the heads milled and try to squeeze a few extra ponies!

Man this hit and miss style of tuning is better suited for a SBC or Ford, not a car as complex as the 928. I would use some proper tools for setting timing for example..

To make sure that you are not going to cause ping. here is what I would do.
Connect a vacuum gauge, advance timing as you did to the max vac, then retard the timing 1 and a half inches of mercury on your vac gauge. to check on the road, with the engine hot carefully listen as you do some full throttle starts. you should not here any pinging.

I have been considering messing with the ignition timing on my 84 too. Using a vacuum pump I activated the vacuum advance diaphragm on the distributor at idle. Idle speed/sound changed, no pinging. With a timing light I think I measured the difference between normal idle and advance @ idle to be ~10 degrees. Can I safely rotate my distributor so that it gives an extra 10 degrees (not including vacuum advance)?

I don't know , but I am having it tested Tuesday morn, but I do notice a " livelier" engine sound and response!

I timed my engine by feel, then bought a timing light and discovered that I was dead on.

So did I by hand and by an aaahhha moment when i pulled the old dist out of my donor car! I marked it in my car as referrence then tweaked it by hand , and notice when I hand checked the spot where I started and ended is maybe less than 1/4 inch or mm or degrees, I'm anxious to see If I'm on or way off

I advanced mine a hair, and it's much more responsive.

I've found that the euro setting if 28deg is pretty spot on. If you disconnect your vac advance and look at the harmonic balancer, it equates to just about 8deg btdc. Hmmmm...... Kinda like the old american muscle cars eh? I know, I know...it's not a dyamamic adjustment like the factory recommends, but, the end result nets pretty much the same. Depending on what grade of fuel, and what engine you're running, adj as necissary. What can I say, I have old trucks, and tractors also.
