Rear Wing Strength?
In an effort to combine my two fav hobbies, I was goofing around one day and tried a series of combinations to put my Thule bike rack for my Jetta on the 928. Well I can get it to work provided I run the strap over the rear wing. there isn't much stress on the wing as the bike weight (25 lbs) is resting on mainly the two straps running up to the hatch. So what do you think? Does anyone know how much stress the rear wing can safely take?
And yes, I know it's an 86 Raleigh Technium 440 and the rack is worth more than the bike, but the car and the bike are from the same era....

with the wing as old as it is and seeing how its attached i wouldnt put anything on the wing cept a beer and hoagi and some chips.
YMMV but there have been others reporting the studs ripped out of the wing there are 2 on each side. try removing the wing and see how that works use PB blaster on the screws

But at highway speeds, the wing is pushed down by about 50lbs, so I really don't see the problem? If you don't go much above 60, it should be fine..

That's way too nice of an S4 to be messing with straps over the wing. Just remove the front wheel and seat and put the bike inside the hatch.
Plus, why would you want to display a Raleigh on a Porsche 928, it should be a Cannondale, etc

and when you hit a bump at 50 mph guess how much the load factor goes up with an extra weight on the tail..
I would figure out a way to put the bike into the car, the less things you have contacting the painted surfaces the less damage you will do to your car

Have a normal body hitch installed and you can get a bracket made to hold a bike. Your make shift set up is not going to work well and may cause damage to the car. Porsche did say something about towing in the manual, check it out.

Rack comes off tomorrow! The bike barely fits in the hatch w/front tire removed, but the new (to me) bike (a Trek) doesn't fit at all. :-(
I'll explore a hitch. This car is my keeper and I don't want to dork it up. I know they make a hitch for it somewhere because I saw more than one pulling a little two wheeled utility trailer while I was in Germany. The trek is lighter, a tad uner 20 lbs... ;-) |
