new 928 owner questions ...

ok so I picked this 82 928 up today on ebay for 1k and as much as a Porsche fan I am having owned 6 of them never have I had the honor of the 928 ...lol
so anyway after unloading it and driving it in to the garage there is no oil or amps showing on the dash ? ? it sounds fine and it's not killing the battery so far ? ? could this be a fuse ? ? also I plan on changing all the fluids after work anything else I should do before taking it on the road ( 928 ) things to check ??

Thanks

Justin

Jeezus. You bought a $1000 928 and drove it in the garage. Your already in the plus side.

No history of a timing belt or water pump. First thing on your very soon list. Old fuel or how long has the car been sitting? Old fuel clogs everything upstream. Pics pics pics!

Generally when both the volt meter and the oil pressure gauge are not working it is one of the 3 plugs on the instrument pod that is not properly connected. Each of the plugs has about 13 wires going to it and the plug connects to a fairly fragile flex circuit "board". Most likely some of your other indicator lamps are also out. Removing the pod is not too difficult but you will need to reference the WSM and I recommend you search this site, and others, for more information.

disconnect the battery first before you work on any electrical part of the 928

WOW! A running 928 for $1k is a STEAL...of course if it needs paint (and you want to do a good job) that is at least $7k and a new interior can cost $2k (if you found a decent interior from a parts car or two) all the way up to a full Champagne interior costing as much as a NICE S4!

As for T-belt...if it breaks it will leave you stranded but it won't do any damage to the engine (if this is a US '82 and I imagine it is because NO ONE would sell a running '82 EURO for $1k!) so change it if you want to or just wait to get stranded when it breaks... Fluids would be a good idea. Especially tranny (guessing it is an auto) even though it is a PITA to get to and do.

I have a good 928 resource for new 928 guys... DVD called 928 EVOLUTION the second "printing" just came out today. $20 plus $5 shipping... email me if you would like a copy.

Also my new 2011 calendar is out... High Heels & Hot Wheels... I have two versions; an all 928 version and a full Porsche line version... same cost as the DVD...

Taking a wild guess its this one.
Porsche : 928: eBay Motors (item 190450902657 end time Oct-07-10 05:33:14 PDT)

VIN: WP0JA092XCS820648
Year: 1982
Make: Porsche
Model: 928
Style/Body: Coupe 2D
Class: Sport Car - Premium
Engine: 4.5L V8 MPI
Country of Assembly: Germany
Vehicle Age: 28 year(s)
Calculated Owners: 3
Calculated Accidents: 0
Last Reported
Odometer Reading: 141,943

Seems like an OK car. I don't think you will see any profit in fixing it to sell though.

That looks very nice for a grand - with some excellent and rare options: 5spd & sports seats

Hold on to that baby and love it like the rest of us..

Owning a 928 is risky business - but sometimes you just gotta say "what the fudge".

What a huge mistake buy the seller, listing a 5speed as an automatic!

Nice win , Gibson36, have fun with it.

Mike,
Since when does anyone make a profit after fixing up a 928? lol

I know a "couple" people that do, but their number one rule is to only buy almost pristine cars, low mileage, etc. They do a $500 detail (makes an almost car all the way pristine), maybe a $2k service (TB and WP, fluids, etc) and still make 20% or less on a $30k+ car.

Great Buy Gibson,
Look under the passenger side carpet. There is a wooden door that lifts up. You'll find both fuses and relays there.
good luck,
Mike

WOW...a 5spd car even! NICE catch! The paint is cracking me up...another respray where they didn't bother to even TRY to mask stuff off... The rear bumperettes should be black as should the rubber beading between the front and rear bumper covers... For $1k though, how can a person complain! WOW!

The clutch bleed is a notoriously screwed-up thing.

Sometimes its best done at the drivers floorboard by burping air out of the base of the master.

That 78 is a sweet looking car, guy in Germany got a deal IMHO.

Roll of the dice, very easy for one of early cars to need serious wampum.
