Ball Joints

Last year when I got the car safetied I was told my ball joint on passenger side had a tiny bit of play, I want to change it this year but when I looked on line about them there is some people that says you have to replace the lower control arm as well and then there is some saying you can just swap out the ball joint, I figure I will ask the people that knows best. what is your opinion and what would you go with, Thanks.

On the lower control arm you can just replace the ball joint. On the upper you need to replace the whole arm. I believe there are some rebuilders out there or maybe even a kit by now for the upper arms but last I checked you needed the whole upper arm.

Kit is available for the pre 86.5 uppers. I've installed them, IIRC it requires reuse of the ball itself but replacement of the socket.

Lowers are as Pete says, replaceable also. Do pay special attention to make certain you don't have the old original aluminum bodied carriers for ball joints -- those fail and are unsafe. They, like fuel lines, need to be replaced immediately for safety's sake.

There is a technical bulletin in the CD set on this subject. It shows replacing the early ball joint + aluminum carrier and eccentrics with new parts.

clean out the eccentric grooves and add antiseize,
so the eccentrics can turn at the alignment shop.

they usually will strip them out due to the friction of the dirty adjustment eccentrics

If you find one, search long and hard for reviews before you procure it.

What would you consider an "upgrade'. The stock ones are aluminum with no tendencies of failure. The only benefit a steel one would provide (if you ignore the extra weight) is the use of a cheap easily replacable mono ball, which, with no boot to seal it, technically aren't street legal.

well iam thinking control arms, a-arms, everything... those a-arms are as heavy as 600lbs of shiittake mushrooms... im sure suspension travel and responsiveness would be improved with those lightweight tubular a-arms and what not..

The stock A-arms are featherweight already.
Tubulars are bound to be heavier

The coilovers are pretty heavy but all that stuff supports a pretty heavy car. There are a couple different ones you could buy. i don't think you'd save any significant weight though and they are pretty pricey. The a arms aren't actually too heavy, the lower arms actually feels much lighter than the fabcar a-arms I have for my 951 (haven't actually weighted them). Lightweight tubular a arms are easily damaged for street use by rocks and debis. buy anyway no one makes them that i know of anyhow. best you could do is a set of coilovers I think
