Take a pic of the VIN plate and post it.

That's the chassis numbering system for the early car.
Its for a 1980 USA car.
Why would you think the first numbers should be 928?

is it also normal for the spare tire to read 11/78 and the door jamb sticker says 9/79 and my title says 80?

Quote from Landsharkoz - Home of the Porsche 928 In Australia

For those early cars which pre-date Porsche model year 1981:

Example: 9289100870

928 = type, 9 = 1979[A = 1980), 1 = 4.5ltr [2 in USA, Japan],
0 = coupe body style and (0)870 = serial number in that year

^^ nice reference!
Yes.

The model year 1980 starts getting produced before 1980. In this case, approximately August of the preceding year.

True for most cars.

How about some pictures, that will allow folks to give you more ideas and information!

Is it the pic or do you have a giant rear tire? See if you still feel "lucky" in 6 months.. 928's can elicit feeling you don't quite understand.. have fun

I've run good used tires on my Euro for awhile. Get the correct size for those Phone Dials. Are they 16's? If so, should be 225/50/16 all around.

More numerical ID stuff for early cars.

Chassis number format matches what you were originally calling VIN.
(I didn't realize the vin number was different, as pointed out by the gentleman with the 78 car)

I just found another Porsche with a serial number starting with 92A. This Porsche is going to be auctioned off on Saturday here in Alberta. The serial number is 92A0810323.

This serial number is almost identical to nuts4porsche - maybe there is another code that is different from the standard. STRANGE!

Looks like serial numbers starting with 92A are valid. Landseer you were correct that the chassis number and VIN are the same.

Here is part of a table I found on the Porsche 928 France website (http://www.clubporsche928.fr).

Year No. Start End Market
1978 928810 1 2646 RDM
1978 928820 1 1139 USA+Canada
1978 928820 9501 9575 Japon
1979 928910 1 3059 RDM
1979 928920 1 2285 USA+Canada
1979 928920 9501 9623 Japon
1980 92A080 1 1192 RDM
1980 92A081 1 1649 USA+Canada
1980 92A082 1 1466 Japon

Not all early serial numbers start with 928. Learn something every day!

Are both front fenders without sidemarker lights on nuts4porsche's car?
Its an 80 USA automatic by VIN.

Looks like the DS fender has no lights?
