My transmission is fixed...see video...,
My story:
I purchased my 84 auto three years ago, and I have essentially driven it as a three speed due to the failure of the 4 gear to engage. I didn't drive the very much, I spent more time washing it... I took it to a Mercedes mechanic in April and after some delays, his and mine. Today I picked it up and for the first time experienced a smooth shifting four speed transmission. The repair bill was 1,500 to remove, rebuild and install my old transmission, plus i pulled the valve body and governor from a spare 84 euro trans i had in the garage... The main problem was that inferior/wrong parts were used by the previous owner in an effort to fix the fourth gear. It now has new Mercedes dealer clutch pack, bands, trans kit etc... The car now revs at 2,200 at 80 mph, and as the video shows, 1,900 rpm at 60mph....no leaks. I did it, finally...! Thanks Leo, glen and all else for the inspiration Http://www.evozine.com/4speed.mov |
Sweeeeeet! Feels *****en, huh Al? I know, I cruise at 80 to work and back and I think I am hitting around 2300rpm. The car isn't even trying.
Great job! Now on to your 2nd 928 Project ;) |
project #2...
I still have a few items left to fix on this car. Plus I have the following limitations regarding a second project car:
-no time -no garage space and most importantly, -no planned budget 1984 Porsche 928s Web Page http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1306906808.jpg |
This is great news! Congratulations. Enjoy (finally) full performance.

Al, just got back into town after a few weeks on east coast. Congrats on the transmission - maybe see you on the road around town sometime.

three weeks..
Yes, Neil, you will see the car near my work in the parking a lot a few days/week. Hey, a lot has happened in my car world the last few weeks, here is a quick photo summary:
(i) Leo extracted the spare transmission out of my separate one car garage, thereby freeing up space: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1307162819.jpg (ii) I picked up a new daily driver to replace the wrecked benz, it's a 2003 bmw 5 series, it's quite a cream puff, I love the drive, and it looks great in the two car garage next to my shark. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1307162880.jpg and, (iii) Now my 928 is again a fun project car, as it drives great with the 4th gear. My remaining to do list items are small, easy and inexpensive, except the the carpet...! I made a commitment to fix all of the items on the 928 list in 2011. I still expect to achieve this.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1307163053.jpg |
FYI, the Carpet Kit took me about 3 Weekends to complete. Even though it's all pre-cut, you still need to do a lot of trimming.
|
carpet,
yes, carpet is last, sounds like a big job:
The funny thing is that if this was Leo's car, the remaining items would be done in one weekend... I need until the end of the 2011... |
Al, did you install those after-market headlights or were they already on the car when you purchased it?
|
No. Those ugly head lights came with the car--. I do like the euro cars headlights much more. Any idea how much the larger bulbs cost...?
|
Al, nice daily driver - now you only have to finish up the 928 :-)
