Does anyone know how the fuel cooler ( that blk foam insulated tube on the firewall behind the airbox ) on 83-84 928s works? Can it really give boosted HP? Does the AC have to be on to work? Someone clue me in please! J

No clue on what or how the fuel cooler works, maybe Porsche assumes when its hot outside you turn on the AC?
When fuel gets hot the more volatile components boil off and you end up with less octane. Simple fact its HOT under the hood of a 928. |

The fuel's heat is transfered to the freon. Yes it boost HP (maybe 5 HP) by keeping the fuel temp around 70f. Yes the A/C has to be on for the fuel cooler to work.

Wow that's kind of a trip. I thought that was a new idea when I saw it on a 996.

Thanks, now i know. Very interesting, so maybe the fuel cooler will balance out the HP lost running the AC.? Seems like a high tech device for 1984!

the AC does have to be on (and working) it gets freon after the evaporator so heavy initial AC use may not allow so much fuel cooling - In practice it also cools the excess fuel returning to the tank - so it is designed over time to cool the whole contents of the tank as well as real time cooling of fuel feeding to the rails. Of course without it - circulating the fuel to the rails & excess back to the tank would actualy serve to heat all the fuel in the tank so its also a prevatative measure for that effect too.

Cool fuel doesn't increase HP, max HP depends on how much air goes through the motor.

I know this thread is three years old but is it a big deal if the cooler is removed? I am taking the A/C system off of my '84 and need to figure out how to safely connect the fuel lines. Do the earlier 928's even have this fuel cooler or have they always been installed since '79?

Doesn't seem to be a big deal. Have been running 84,5,6 without AC in hot summer, no issues.

Landseer - Do you have the cooler still installed? I am having a hard time finding the correct fuel return hose to purchase to be able to connect the fuel rails directly to the main return line tucked under the right hood hinge (left side of the engine compartment if you are looking from the front to the back of the engine). I want to completely remove the cooler and the two formed tubes that connect the rails to the cooler and the cooler to the return line. If anyone knows the right part number please let me know...
Thanks! |

Mine are installed. Just commenting from the functional perspective.
There doesn't seem to be any alternative part or bypass hose. Most all these cars had A/C. You would have to safely plan and create your own solution.

Plexus - can you post a picture of how your return fuel line is routed?

Both (steel) lines come up from the tunnel, change to flexible hoses halfway up the firewall.
![]() engine might confuse you a bit, 2002 4.3 Lexus) Fuel lines not connected as yet, need to lengthen lines as Lexus fuel in/out are on the other side of the engine. |

Here is a better pic' of how the fuel in/return enter the rails, same as a ROW.
just noticed it in 78porsche928's post on his project. looks the same, steel to halfway up the firewall, then into flexible hoses. Pelican Parts Technical BBS - Powered by vBulletin
