Wiring question, many dash warning lights....
 

Well my car is back together and was about to start up but as I turned the key, I was greeted by a small amount of smoke from the wires that lead to the drivers side carputer and this:

I looked over most of the connections and it appears that everything is plugged into correct place and none of the wires are fried, however I did do some "trimming" of the wiring harness because of unused accessories (windows, blower, etc) so Im not sure if that is the culprit..

Symptoms are as follows:

Hazards dont flash, only solid light appears
Pegged fuel gauge
Hi-beam indicator on
Brake fluid light on
Coolant light on
Wash fluid light on
Tail/Stop light on

Any advice would be appreciated...

Ok, now you sparked an interest. Pics required of the Engine.

Also, did you ever had the Pod out? PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and the connectors are suspect in our OB's.

I'm thinking pod plugs are not back in the right places - swapping around the center and right ( console side) will give you similar problems. BTDT!

Its definitely not the one closest to the console because the insert clip is very broken, but it may be the other two... I will check tomorrow to make sure though

specs are big ass cam and slight bore... ;)
the sister of this motor dynoed at 465wrhp and 480rwtq but that was with a/c and other crap that mine doesnt have

back to the problem...

just checked the pod plugs and they are all correct, so are the black.yellow plugs going into the carputer in the drivers footwell.

found another oddity, the headlights will rise but the only thing that illuminates is teh pass. side fog light and side marker

I read in the manual that the solid hazard light has something to do with the central warning system but it didnt mention much else about it... so back to square one and trying to decipher the wiring manual

No, really, if its a race car (which it is) I'd probably remove the warning computer under the dead pedal and strip-out the wiring.

By carving-up the harness already, since the circuits interrelate extensively and without intuitive logic, I think the only good answer is elimination of the rest.

When wires make smoke, something is usually damaged and needs to be replaced. Car fires really aren't much fun and if this car is for track, hope its a track without turns with that carb, might as well get to stripping out the wires you don't need.

I think the first question is:

Did all that wiring work "before" the engine was put in?

The engine has been in there for quite some time with no adverse effects on the electrical system. The interior was removed to install a roll cage.

Will the lights/hazards/wipers still work if I remove the warning box?

Also dangler- what do you think every single race car was using for fuel delivery before 1980? Nascar still uses Holley 2x pumper carbs (the exact model pictured) when they race road courses... post something helpful or dont post at all

Just curious, since you removed so much of the original wiring, why didn't you just pull the lot and install a 'painless' system? As it is a track car your requirements are a lot less.

I'd pull the pod and the instrument cluster, then clean all the contacts and re-install. It doesn't make sense for all those lights to be on at once; I suspect that one of the wiring harness connectors has a problem connection at the back of the cluster.

PS: I'm a purist, but I think that a chevy conversion is better than parting the car out. Why nobody has done a Northstar or Ford 32 valve conversion baffles me-
