Shifter Coupler Bushing
 

OK guys - I need assistance again. I have heard that the shifter coupler bushing is a much needed replacement part after 30 years and my shifter is rather vague. I know how to find 2nd and the others, but I'd rather fix it if I let the wife ever drive. At $13, it is not the price of the part, but the labor that gets you. Where is this part located and how do I replace it? What is in the way? How many drinks will it take? I do have a lift to ease the pain. Thanks ahead of time. Bob

Without a lift, it's a two drink job.
With a lift, it's a one drink job.
Put your car on the lift, at the front top of the tranny, you'll see it under the dust boot. Mark and note the position and location of the shift coupler before removing. Undo the 10mm(?) pointy ended bolt that secures it to the shaft and remove it. Put the new bushings on, position it, check that it goes into all the gears, tighten it down, and the hardest part.....pull the new dust boot up over the repaired shift coupler.

If you're having a hard time finding gears, it's probably the rear u-joint coupler: you can remove and rebuild this using a small hand (bearing) press and the 914 u-joint rebuild bushings.
