Nope, just a self imploding gear. They turn into dust, literally. replace it and your good to go, unless they have other underlying issues too. The cost is about $25 with instructions too.

Leo, how long would you estimate to do this job? I have read the various write-ups.

Two days ago, I pressed my trip reset and voila! Mileage is now stuck at 75,155 (74, 169 when I got it on the road 3 weeks ago). Thanks.

You NEVER ever use the trip reset when the car is moving, that's what mostly kills them :/

(I presume that is what you did..)

My name is not Leo but all the same, the first one I did took me 4-5 hours. The second and third, much less.....most likely about 1.5-2 hours now that I have done it several times. Make certain the new gear is not rammed down tight against the worm. If there is not just a bit of play with the new gear it is likely to lock up and not work. A washer can be inserted under the foot of the motor to provide the clearance on the gear and drive worm. The reason this may be necessary is some of the new gears are a bit larger in diameter than the old gears....just enough to lock up the odometer causing you to get more practice and removing and installing pods. Don't ask me how I know this....:D

I would say at the point you have your Instrument Cluster out of your Pod, it would take about an hour. It really is easy and you'll see the broken gear right away. You'll actually see pieces falling out of your cluster.

"79" U.S. second owner, 117k at purchase in 04. 117,599 now. (I live in Fargo ND u have 3 nice days per year) Interesting fact about this car, it was originally bought in Salt Lake City Utah by the Mormon church for one of there Pastures, according to the title and reg. But the interesting part is my wife lived there in "79" and knew the preacher that owned it. We meet in 2000 and found the car 45 miles from us in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. Nice car from the church!!!

Really beautiful car, Ice-hot!

Thank you John, You have quite a stable by the looks of it. How do you find time to drive all of them?
John

stepson 09-15-2011 07:01 PM

Unfortunately, I don't/can't drive them all enough (see post #12) I do drive them a lot, but there just isn't enough time in a week to drive them all. I do spend a lot of time on ALL of them keeping them drivable, though. :)

I enjoy working on cars when I don't HAVE to work on cars. If I HAD to work on them, I wouldn't enjoy it. Sometimes, I only have 1 928 drivable, but I always keep at least 1 drivable so I can enjoy all of them. When I have all of them drivable: WHOOOO HOOOO!

924CarreraGTP 09-16-2011 03:15 PM

I now have two 928s and neither one has a working odometer. I simply do not care, because the twin cam 928's do not interfere if the timing belt breaks. So I could burn up the road all day and if the timing belt breaks, its 4 hours and I'm back driving. This is why I stay away from 4 cam 928s.
928s on the whole are solid as a rock. The transmissions leave a little to be desired, but I haven't broken one yet and I can break a steel ball.
