Wacky dash idea
 

3:38am perfect time for a wacky idea.

Strip the dash to the bare aluminum and coat it with truck bed liner.

Maybe do something to the surface as it sets up to give it a desirable texture.

Maybe paint the result.

Maybe try some other surface coating than truck bed liner.

Maybe I should go to sleep? Laters ...

Not a bad idea given the cracked status for most of our cars. What does the dash look like stripped? I was thinking anodized but you don't want anything thats gonna catch that cali sun the wrong way. Anything other than a smooth surface sounds like it'll be a dusty uncleanable mess in the end. Maybe a sandblasted or brushed finish with a flat black or grey? Bedliner the underside for the noise issue.

The dash frame behind all the plastic is downright ugly...I have one that is stripped, I will see if I have a photo of it, without crawling up into the attic where it stays for the time being...

The fiberglass dash holds some promise, but it is more for a race car than a bolt in for replacing a conventional dash...still a work in process ....

I'm starting to like the look of Jim Baileys brown car, no console, carpeted tunnel with the shifter just sticking up, so some kind of spartan dash is also appealing, but only for my "track" car.

As a former 240z owner, those dash cracks not only annoy me, I find them embarrassing to be on a 928. I know the current fixes aren't too great, but those cracks etc its like we don't care.

How about no Dash altogether? Here's what you can look like too!!

Worst is when you have the wacky 3 am idea, but can't remember what it was the next day except that it seemed like a great idea. I've learned to write stuff down so that I can at least verify in the calm light of day that they were wacky.

Sooner or later a better fix for the dash and pod has to be worked out.

I like the idea of a fiberglass dash that would cover the metal frame and then be covered in either leather or hide of a nauga, then bolted back in. It would need to have the proper cut outs for AC vents, defroster, as well as the glovebox and the like. I also think the console would need to be seperate, unlike what I have. Also, the pod in fiberglass would complete the solution.

The "solutions" today look really good (leather rework by Budd and Champlain) I wonder how long it will be before the substrate continues its cracking under the new cover....I have to think a proper fiberglass substrate would be a good replacement....
