short circuited battery
New guy here (new now, had a '78 928 years ago). I just bought a '86 928S that ran great till I messed it up. The prior owner had put mothballs in it to keep the mice out - didn't work very well so now reeks of mothballs. I took out the battery to clean out the mothballs from the tray. I could have sworn I connected the positive lead first but when I was tightening the connection, the wrench touched the side of the battery compartment and put out some sparks. So now most of the electronics in the car work but I get nothing when i hit the started. No clicking solenoid, nothing. How badly did I screw up?

You shorted the battery, not sure how that should mess up anything outside the loop of battery to shorted spot.
Is the battery OK, fully charged? |

check negative ground strap where it connects to body - troublesome rust area - maybe moving it loosened it or caused it to lose good contact
